I reckon it would. I'm comparing an HMR to a 223, which perhaps isn't fair, but there's a shitload of difference there.

I thought the hornet had heavier projectiles than the hmr, but I can only see the hollow points (20g) for sale. The 20 grainers do a lot less meat damage than the jelly tip 17's.

Is the new 17 hornet just the 17 AI hornet?

Much the same as the Hornet AI, but has some subtle differences (I don't know off hand what they are)

If you can believe Wikipedia it says they are one and the same but I thought the original 22 hornet was a rimmed case and the 17hornet is a rimless one. Stand to be corrected/educated though.

Wouldn't be much better than a 17hmr I would think... Very poor projectile construction for goats imo...

That thing so devastate them with head shots. I wouldn't want to be hit in the head at 200m with it any way,

+1, designed for varmints, wouldn't even try on a goat, another point fir the .223!

Gotta remember that it is your duty as a hunter to kill as quickly and humanely as possible, the likelyhood is that the little varmint pill will desintegrate at those velocities and just badly maim it. No one likes to lose a wounded animal.
I bought the howa, awesome little rifle and accurate as straight out the box.
