Helluva good deal Dan..
I got a Savage 93r17. Wee sharp shooter! Nikon P5 scope is bloody brilliant for it.
Mag fitting in it is a bit naff. It has a bit of a rail it has to slide up on and its not the slickest operation. Can't fall out though which is always good lol.
Longest kill shot so far is 305m on a bunny.
Doesn't like wind though. My boys WMR is way better in windy conditions, it just doesn't have the legs.
17 a bit light on roos too, WMR wins that battle. But the 17 does f@#k them up... eventually haha

So.....anyone got a laminate stock for a 917 ?
Don't do it. CZ or some such is the way to go. You give up at least 20 metres range with the semi, they also need a lot of cleaning and you need to run the A17 ammo.
@viper is that a varmint weight barrel? If so do you recommend it or just run a hunting barrel?

@Dama dama , it's stainless and fluted ( see photo , best close up pic I have ) .
I would regard it as a varmint weight barrel but I have seen a lot heavier profiles . Guess it could be called medium heavy. It is ok to carry but certainly heavier to carry than say a Ruger American.
For walking type hunts I use a 10 /22 so the Marlin is my long range rig. With the Marlin I tend to walk to where I want to shoot from then set up to shoot from a static position .
I haven't used a standard barreled Marlin to compare it to for weight.
I tend to believe with the 17HMR that with the accuracy and distance the little round does to extract the best from the rifle they do best on a bipod and prone.
That doesn't mean I don't take sitting or standing shots but I prefer prone .
All that said I would imagine a standard hunting barrel on a Marlin would be just as good as my varmint barrel, they really don't generate that much heat.
Thanks @viper I'm been considering my rimfire options for while now, and thinking that Marlin in 17hmr and my wee JW15 will be all I need. I need to do some more work with a norinco before I commit to the plan as I will have to sell my current main .22 to fund a 17 purchase. Heading up to Alex today, so swap the scope over and give the wee commie a run through its paces...
Your one certainly looks the part, but not sure I need something so heavy. My old man has a stirling 17hmr, so I know have fun the round is, but rifle a bit rough, shitty trigger and unreliable ejection.
Great photo by the way.

I put some of that A17 past the labradar with my weihrauch. Its definalty faster that the CCI and hornady by an average 100fps but the ES was horrible +- 150fps. Accuracy was also average at 100yds but my rifle has a distict liking for the cci 17gr hollow point.

I’ve been running a A17 for night shooting roos. Put over 500 rounds through it so far. Mainly the federal 17gr. Shoots about 1 “ at 100 with a 2x 4x night vision scope. Would probably be better with an actual optic that you could see the aim point with.
The mags work fine. You do need to fit the heel in first then it is tight to lock it in place. If it fits easy it will not feed properly.
I bedded mine, I think it made a little difference. I have the laminate stock model.
I cut the barrel to 18” as soon as I got it and use my ar15 can on it. I would use a baffle can like the sonic 35 I use as they cake up a lot. It runs fine wet or dry no issues.
Only had a few failure to fire issues from some old hornady ammo.
I don’t know the truth behind the crowning issue they said they had with them as mine wasn’t re crowned properly and I ended up using a 45’ case champher tool to debur the barrel.
The trigger only goes down to 5lb.
Hope this info helps someone.
We have 3 of them between us for night shooting and they all work fine.
Have you considered .17wsm?? Zippy little round. Not to expensive. Need to import some nice semi auto .17wsm.

Marlin 917 v was an excellent rifle. Used it to take goats and many varmints.
Crazy accurate and well priced.
Had a CZ452 that was also very accurate and just a bit more refined than the Marlin but they were both excellent.
Hotbarrels, that hm2 was ages yeah? Was also very common due to timing though if I remember correctly?
Anyway, I would go the bolt action over the semi but that’s my preference.
Pretty sure I've got a Boyds evolution laminate stock for a 917, in salt and pepper colour scheme (black, white and grey). Think its this one https://www.boydsgunstocks.com/gunst...bc-2z992221ezz. Fitted for a couple of hours, loved the ergonomics but never used it as the stock didn't suit how I was shooting. From the website would be $330 (if they still shipped), so how does $220 sound?
