Cool story mate. But I'm pretty a neck shot goat would drop. That is of course where everyone tells you to shoot things with a .223 isnt it?

I found those Hornady 55 SP's to be very inconsistent killers. That said, did you check if the neck shot hit bone at all?

I have found the exact same thing. That deer I shot the other day had the biggest hole ever smashed out of it it was unbelieveable same as a few of the goats but honestly alot of these goat should of just been dead but they took hits and it didnt worry them. Maybe I'm used to bigger better things.

    Nope I never checked it

I've neck shot goats with 25/06 before and had them get up and walk around. Stopped neck shooting goats

I think you need to move away from just hitting them in the neck and choose which bit of the neck to hit them in. Aim small.

Neck shots are only good if they hit the spine, especially with a small chambering

With the .223s I've owned I have found sticking one in the ribs much better than neck shots. Not as dramatic as a properly exectued neck shot but a reliable killer especially on deer. Leave the neck shots for the heros

I'd say considering I like things to fall over on the spot that it would be considered ethical??

Im prety sure I know where to aim on a goat guys and Im kinda sure I can hit them in that spot. I didnt just decide that the .223 is gutless.

I could be wrong it could very well be ammo inconsistency but from what I gather off some members here who I actually think has had enough experince with .223s and larger animals is its a rabbit gun that can kill deer. I've shot more goats with a .22lr than I have with a .223 so maybe Im jumping the gun but I do know my 6.5 would have planted every goat I hit yesterday in the same spot. Maybe its because of all the talked up bullshit I thought it was a more capable round?

I am a new fulla to the hunting scene and i shot my first goat a couple weeks ago half way up its neck because that was all that was visible at the time and it dropped like a sack of spuds. It is a more than capable round with the right ammo and placement

It must be gutless to not break the neck when hit bang on

Better bullets Toby will improve your lot, explody bullets for neck shots to dump all energy and shock the spine..same for lung shots but slip it in behind the shoulder.

Dad always used/uses Winchester 55gr varmint, it causes damage out of all proportion to its piddly size.
