I'd never heard of 22 high power savage at all until the other day, then happened to have a couple of boxes on the counter in front of me and had to get nosey. Certainly enough powder behind them! These were some Canadian made semi-vintage factory ammo.

I see the 300BLK as a reloader's calibre here in NZ , Belmont have been out of the 300BLK ammo they make for a while now , and the only factory subsonic ammo comes from the USA , I know you can run either subsonic or supersonic , But I mainly view it as a subsonic use , out of say a AR15 platform .
If you go bolt action , and intend only subsonic use , I would have a hard look at the Ruger 77/357 , and say use 200gr + cast bullets out of 38spl cases , cheap as chips to run .

Rebarreling a rifle in 7.62x39 with a 308 barrel instead of 311 can be done and works well if reloading 308 projectiles. You just have to watch out if shooting factory 7.62x39 ammo for rise in pressure and also excessive fouling!

In a bolt action , a 7.62x39 beats a 300 black out in speed but not by much using the same weight projectiles , there simply more powder in The Russian round.
The 200 gr cast in a 38 special might not shoot well at subsonic speed due to insuffisant twist to stabilise the projectile properly.
150 to 158 gr might work better and is more than enough for penetration on goat or deer.
The 22 high power round is still made by selier and belot under the denomination 5.6xsomething...

Had a Zastava in 7.62x39mm , and it was not a very smooth cycling action , and I could not use 200gr lead cast bullets , as the throat in the barrel was short for the std 123gr bullets .

Over the many decades the zastava has been produced , it was sold under different names and had different level of finishing from agricultural to highly polished and blued. Mini Mark X, mini mauser, Remington (799 or 798? Don't remember)... One common thing on all of them is the bloody safety that rarely works, hard to adjust and either too hard or too gentle to move.
If you google a but you will see some nice transformations. One of them is like a mini African rifle with a safety a la Winchester 70, timney trigger, quarter rib ...etc

I have seen a left hand zastava in 7.62x39 on a youtube video. They exist

Unfortunately finding one in NZ is likely to be like finding an unobtainium mine.

This is a good video on 300 BLK. I'm tossing and turning whether to get one in an AR15...

Getting back to the original post. I am in a similar situation and requirements but instead of X39 or the AAC I went for something that's a classic; the 30-30. Using 160gr monoflexs your good to 200 and using a traditional round nose or flat nose type well you can't go past it for a bush thumper! Ordered a Marlin 336 SS through Willsoutfitters.

Same here the lehigh's are the best killers I have used and very expensive on target trajectory validation. It's a shame we don't have more hunting subsonic projectiles to choose from like the guys do in the USA.

i gave up on trying to get subsonic cast bullets to expand, they will but its erratic, better to go for a large flatpoint with carefull bullet placement . . . if i come across a must have animal, a soft lead bullet at 1600fps absolutely nails them.

as far as bullet weight goes i have found the lighter 150-170s bullets do about as well in my tests for penetration as the heavier 200s . . . but that was at or inside 100yds . . once the range moves out i prefer the longer heavier for calibre bullets for the longer shots out to +200yd on animals, the further you go out the more pronounced the advantage to the heavy weights, at these lower power levels any advantage is worth having, i want over penetration, a thru n thru shot taking out the clockwork is my ideal . . . for range work i have found with my 2 sub rifles the heavys are a little more consistant / accurate ( wind permitting ) out to 300-400yds on steel plates at around 1.5MOA shooting over my day bag . . your rifles mybe different

i have no experience with the exotic and expensive varietys especially made for subs . . but they sure look the business

Right. Found a new ruger 300aac for 850, thinking I might throw this vx3i 1-5 on it.

Any other recommendations for a bush pig rifle wise?
