Our corner liquor store was ram raided a few weeks back, the diary same thing a year ago and was boarded up for 6 months waiting for glass, our mailboxs get regularly hit by meth addicts a few times a week, this in a pretty good suburb, things have dramatically changed in last few years, if it hasn't yet come to your part of NZ it is coming unfortunately. A bit off topic but the truth.

Oh, there goes my plans of start training for Olympic trap as soon as I am there. Hopefully UpperHutt shotgun club have some guns which they can lend to people without FAL.

Sadly, same sort of story in my suburb where $1M wouldn't even get you started on the housing ladder.

You can shoot under supervision of another licensed person, think you can do it in groups anyway, I'm sure they would be able to cater as school kids do it.

22lr and 12g apear to be almost agreed on. I don't have one but 223 would be usefull for cheapish varment/wallaby/fallow etc then depending on what you want to shoot, 7-08 308 6.5 or even 243 would cover the rest. Any of the magnums for longer range stuff

So this is what you need
1- Rabbits, Hares, Fallow, Wallaby and closer Pork - 6.5 Grendel
2- Further away Wallaby, Pork, Fallow - 260 Rem
3- Even further away wallaby, Pork, [Fallow have been dealt with] Reds, close Tahr and just about anything on the east South Island. 6.5 x55
4- Thar and Reds that cannot dealt with closely 6.5 06 or 6,5 PRC.

    I hope this has helped.

    6.5 for life

I downsized everything a few years ago and the biggest I own is now 6.5 of a couple of different flavours.
    Buttt...................
I have a mild hankering for another .308 , haven’t owned one for years but when I did it was in all honesty a truly versatile and handy caliber.

Used 12 gauge shotty for various game for 40+ years. 22 same, shot my first two deer with one. 308 since I graduated from 303 in ‘76. 222,223 for goats etc since ‘81. Currently mostly use 223 since shoulder reconstruction but if it came down to it a 308 will always be in the gun safe, followed by one each of the others.

    This.
Or maybe I'm just following my wife and kids.

There is also 4 weeks annual leave which you are strongly encouraged to take. Pregnant women are looked after and get paid maternity leave once you have NZ permanent residency, childbirth is free. Pharmacy prescriptions are free for young kids and are $5 for adults.

Family life is encouraged all the way. It's not work, work till you're burnt out. If you want to be an entrepreneur, then you'll get help for that too.

Hi mate, I would suggest joining a club as soon as you get here. They will be able to lend you a gun and sell you ammo. Also as part of the FAL process you will need a referee to vouch for you and there will be loads of candidates at the club.

If your in Palmy check out these guys, they might be a bit closer https://www.rrgc.org.nz/ hopefully their shotgun range will be back up by the time you get here.

Thanks for the pointers @Sh00ter. I do intend to join "Hutt Valley Clay Target Club" as soon as I am there. Pushing my wife to move to Wellington. Better chances for my Job there and Hutt valley club has ISSF trap range.

Along with that NZDA. Lets see If I ever make it there

I am sorry I cant agree with Jakewire and his 6.5 calibers - some of those are extremely rare in NZ and will need to be handloaded -especially 6.5 Grendell 6.5- 06 6.5 PRC will not be available in country sports stores -given current ammo shortages is one going to be able to get even components at all - no stick to either 7mm Mag or 30-06 , a .223 . a .22 and a shotgun do everything and ammo available all over nz
