Going back to the original post a 308 is probably all you want. Good out to 300m plus. Good for a bush hobbit gun and reasonable for more open country. Plenty of options with 'roll your owns' too.

    6.5x55 is a brilliant setup if you reload. Run the numbers 140gn amax @ 2750fps... That's 1000ftlb to 700yards
Plenty of range and oomf for most people.

My 6.5 is chopped to 18.5 with a suppressor added; I was still pushing 140's @ 2600 which is 1000ftlb to 600 yards again, PLENTY.

Nah. The reality is different to the stats in my experience. They are out of legs at 500 really. Mine is doing 2840fps using 140 Amax, and I limit it to under 450 yds.

Andy, maybe you are a better shot than me.
I'm not saying they don't kill at longer range, I just don't like the slower expiry of the animal.

Put it this way i dont leave much to chance with the whole package with gear prep and suitability of conditions and not to mention alot of range time before i take the longer shots as i beleive in ethical
    Shooting.
I try to leave the longer shots for the 338 as a rule but the right time right place the 6.5 will do it

you would need to know the history on a second hand 6.5 saum as its only going to have a 1500 round barrel life. 6.5*55 probably has twice that.

Given it's the ballistic twin of a 6.5-284, you can possibly expect the same performance on game and around 1000rnds of barrel life with decent loads

Been using a 6.5x06 for a few years worked well. Started using 100gr tsx's at 3300 lately and I'm very impressed with the way it kills.

You're a bit of the mark there.

6.5-06 is close to 150 fps faster than the equivalent in a 6.5-284 with a 24-26" barrel with 120, 130 and 140 weight projectiles.

Barrel life in mine was way better than a 1000 rnds as well.

    ..
I suspect there is a confounding of variables there.
The 284 case was designed to be '06 capacity but obviously shorter. Everything else being equal, I'd expect less than 100fps in either direction, probably less.
Accuracy-wise, you'd put your money on the 284 version- these were the default choice for F-Class a few years back before the bigger 7s came into favour
