    6.5x284 action length

What would be the best Action length to base a 6.5x284 on.
    A short 243 length or a longer medium 30 06 length.

30-06 length unless building on something like a Tikka m595 with generous mag length.
Or a t3 because they are all long.
Or perhaps a 8mm mauser, probably ideal length.

~*quickload*~ tells me that you might get 30-50 fps more from a long action 6.5-284 loaded to 3.2" as opposed to a short action 6.5-284 loaded to 2.9"

If it's a custom barrel, loading mag length to fit the throat etc is irrelevant as you have the throat cut for your short action mag length loads.

If it's a Blaser it's irrelevant because you own the pinnacle of bolt action rifle design.

Yeah if you know what bullet you want and if that bullet will shoot, if not, with the long action you'll have more choice of bullet seating to help with finding accuracy , Yes?
I mean if you haven't found what you want in a shorter action by 2.9 then you have nowhere to go but shorter, ie deeper.

It's all relative to your throat. Have the throat set up for VLD bullets to touch the lands at just under max length your mag will feed (about 2.95" for a Sako III). Then if the bullet doesn't shoot touching the lands, you can seat them deeper... if it doesn't shoot well within a tenth or 2 of the lands then with either action it's time to look for another bullet? You probably wouldn't choose to build one on a short action but it wouldn't be significantly less functional, just less than optimal. Which was of course what you were asking about. So get a Blaser.

Avoid any of the short actions with short mags, they will only give you grief.

Some of the feed rails on some long action cartridges will not work well with the 284 case.

A long action Rem700, Howa, or Sako m691 will work. Some older sakos not so good - skinny feed rails too skinny.

The days of building custom rifles on old mausers is pretty much over, unless you are doing a DIY project.

Tikka T3 with long mag (I.e. 270win) works like a charm. I have done several of those in 6.5/284 or 284 for customers over the years.

(And for half the $$ of a Blaser!! )

All good and well but you still end up owning a junk T3 at the end of the process. Yuck!!

    6.5x284 action length

There are some folks on here that have spent more money on what I would call limited purpose rifles and optics in a matter of months than I have spent in 15 yrs on my blaser that has 4 barrels and scopes to suit.
I will shortly be able to replace my rimfires using the same platform as well.
    Safe won't be cluttered either.

Yeh, all you'll have is functionality and accuracy, none of the important aspects like a real brand

Nah, what he should do is just buy a Blaser. That way he will have functionality, accuracy AND something nice/worth owning

If he gets a T3 he will end up with the rifle equivalent of a McDonalds happy meal. If that floats your boat, go hard!
