This one is a Howa lightweight cut down to 17.5 for the DPT mag suppressor to be flush. I run 120g NBT hand loaded.

Originally it was for horseback hunting but now wears a walnut stock and is just my go to rifle. if only the loading materials would come back in stock I would be a happy man.

Shot my first 8 point sika with a. Good old trusty 7mm08 t3. 18 inch barrel sending 140 nbts at 2650. Bang flopped that stag at a shade under 400m.

I'll pick another one up eventually. Want a good kimber wearing a vx3 HD as a lightweight alpiner

As someone who's passionate about hunting and firearms, it's great to see like-minded individuals sharing their experiences and knowledge. I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment in this thread. The 7mm08 is a fantastic round that offers a great balance between power and recoil. And yes, necked down .308 brass works like a charm with this round. However, I wouldn't go as far as saying it's the end of days if you can't find it.

Ive got one, a sako finnlight, 708 chopped to 18”, has served me well, mostly my bush rifle, have not spent any time working loads, kinda old school with this rile, any old ammo, bag flop every-time, fixed duplex, dont dial, 154 round nose have been sterling performer’s, last few years.
but i much prefer my M70 7x57, and the 7mm mauser hand-loaded has a bit more grunt, i guess now 30 years with a m70 in 7x57,
The 7mm bore is a great place for a deer rifle, and for you kiwi hand-loaders, we are seeing sufficient increasers in powder and projectiles, since xmass in Canada.

Brought this about 15 years ago an old Sako Forrester L579 action reclaimed and rebuilt from 308 to 7mm-08 on a laminated stock, I have cut the barrel down to 18" and now run a DPT mag suppressor. Its a bit heavy but shots factory ammo better than I can. When I first got it we worked up a reload and had it shooting pretty tight groups at 200m, have a few of those left but now just buy the factory corelites and sakos that seem to shoot ok out of it so happy to feed it them for now.

I did notice that 7mm-08 ammo is bloody hard to get and 308 is way more available so it might go back to a 308 one day but the 100 odd rounds I have for it will last me many a year at the rate I shoot game..





I like it, cant see me getting rid of it has a nice solid/safe Half bolt, sprung floor so no mag to loose.

Been messing with my other rifles alot more 7mmsaum, 280ai and a 223 so my load development for this been slacking. Box of Belmont 139sst for the meantime, going I dunno how fast/slow. Carried this rifle on several multi-day missions without firing,tested its zero last week bang on, the z3 3-9 in talleys had taken some knocks so thought I'd check.

This guy came charging in yesterday, unlucky timing for him. Didn't take another step. Still works

Greetings All,
Although I have never actually owned a 7mm-08 I have worked with a few. The first, shortly after introduction, was throwing fliers with the then go to powder W760. A bit of testing with the Dupont IMR4064 and IMR4895 I had on hand gave more consistent groups. Looking back on my loads they are all above current book max but were probably max at the time. More recently AR2208 was used in a different 7mm-08 with good results. Earlier this year my son leant me his target 7mm-08 for my F Class shooting. 6 rounds were used getting a rough zero and initial load development and a further 6 to get a final load using AR2206H. 2 more were used to get a 600 yard zero using a target at 200 metres marked with the calculated point of impact for 600 yards (550 metres). Job done.
All of this gives me the impression that the 7mm-08 is an easy cartridge to load for. Had I bought my first centre fire rifle just a few years later it might have been a 7mm-08 rather than a .308W.

What flavor of projectile are you using? My M70 doesn't seem to like 140's so I'm trying to get mine to group 162 Eldm's. I'm not quite where I want to be and was considering a different powder

Few young bucks met their match yesterday. While snooping along too close to wire.

After spotting these grazing down the face, I closed from 500odd yards down to around 120-150yrd in some patchy Manuka. With conditions/wind in favour, was able to wait for 10min until the right opportunity presented. 3 from 3 in as many breathes.. not normal for me but stoked the plan came together on this occasion.

My fav. Tikka T3x superlite. 16” barrel. Hardy suppressor. Carbon stock. Fluted bolt and mtn bolt knob. Optilocks with a z5. 140gn Bt at 2580 fps. Deer don’t like it.
