    Action screw spacing problem

I've got a Rem700 and want to put it in a better stock than the ADL Tactical stock it came in.

In 2 of the 4 stocks I've tried it in the action holes don't line up well enough to get the rear screw through.

Even in the original stock it looks like the hole in the tang is 1mm too far forward. Lucky the holes are generous in that stock.

In a stock with narrower pillar holes, the screw won't hit the thread.

Is this a known problem? (Not that anybody can do much about it).

I like the GRS Berserk stock but the screw won’t meet the threads. Is it insane to have the rear pillar hole opened up enough so the screw will hit the thread?

My immediate reaction to that idea was no way. But on second thought, the Rem stock has wider holes. And so did the 1000 dollar chassis I used to use. So maybe not so bad if done properly?…

Make sure it's the rear action scew hole that's misplaced. If it's the front one your recoil lug may not bear properly (bedding it would fix that).

Otherwise drilling out the rear action screw hole in the chassis is fine, my MDT Savage chassis came factory like that so it can accommodate the variation in Savage short actions - one made at 4.27 and the other 4.40.

    Cheers

Good point on the recoil lug. I’ll be throwing this at a proper gunsmith.
