Another "What Rifle" thread. Norinco JW-15 vs Ruger 10/22

Hey all. I apologise for another one of these threads, but I want to get some opinions on a pee shooter.

I have an opportunity to shot possums and rabbits on a block of land very close to me, BUT it must be a .22 I do not own a .22 so I need to get one. Now I have had .22's in the past (sterling, norinco em332) but never a semi. The ruger appeals but at $599 for a suppressed 4x32 scope stainless version I am a little unsure if I want to spend that much on a bunny gun. So someone suggested a Norinco JW15. Now I have had a play with one at H&F and fuck me that's a horrible action, but I am assured they get better with use, and are fairly accurate.

The rugger is obviously much better quality, but the norinico is CHEAP. What do you guys reckon. I am not adverse to spending the $600, but if I can get something as good for less, or something better for the same i'd be all over it. I'd like a nice CZ, but they are too much for a gun that gets used once in a blue moon. Ideally i'd like to get the ruger bare, and buy a DPT supressor and a nice leupold/redfield/nikon/bushnell 3-9x40, but then the cost goes up even more, so fuck knows.

If buying a semi I'd go Marlin over Ruger, much better rep for accuracy. Both have horrible heavy triggers as standard though.

JW-15s do smooth out a bit over time (and can be polished up with a bit of work). Savage, Marlin, Zastava other good accurate bolt actions. Savage triggers are the nicest IMO. Best to handle a few options in the shop and see which you prefer the feel of.

If the 795 thats $349 plus threading and suppressor, so another $120-130 so that makes it $469-479 it's under $500 which is good. The XT22 is even cheaper $449 with everything.

How does the Remington 597 stack up against the Ruger and the Marlin?

Mate, you mention the CZ and $600, I assume you mean the bolt action 452, model 1/2 Brno etc?
Buy a good condition second hand brno/cz and you will be far far happier than the other options brand new, they pop up for around $600 often (talking bolts here, no experience with the semis.) Just my opinion.
The Marlin would be my next choice, The 10/22 is cool but you need to spend $$$$$ on them to get them shooting well. I hate Norincos!

Keep in mind the quality of ammo you use when you do have your rifle of choice as it makes a big difference over any sort of distance i've found.. I regret buying a Ruger 10/22 i'd recommend something?? not sure what.. Reliablity in regards to cycling ammo has been great but has taken a bit of work to improve its accuracy out of the box.

First work out if you want semi or bolt.

If semi then go Marlin 795, saw them for $299 new somewhere. Trigger is bad but easy to fix yourself, unlike the 10/22.

The Marlin semi trigger can be fixed normally with just a floppy shutter spring and 5 minutes. The Marlin bolts with a pen spring and 10 minutes. They both still shoot well out of the box. I have a secondhand JW that cost very little and shoots amazingly.

How does the Remington 597 stack up against the Ruger and the Marlin?

Brothers 597 was a jamtastic piece of shit, tried multiple mags and ammo in it and nothing seemed to help.

And while we're sharing, buddy at work bought a Mossberg 802 brand new, got it home to find swarf all through the trigger assembly.


Moral of the story, every .22 is bad. Just buy a Mosin, now only $245 at Reloaders!

At this stage i am leaning towards the Ruger as it's a complete package that I can shoot NOW. Where as the Marlin requires threading and fucking about, plus there seems to be enough add ons for the ruger to sink a tactical battle ship, which would be nice for a change. Going to go into Serious shooters tomorrow and see how they both fit and feel me, and see which ones feels best.

ive got a 10 22 and a 597 i must have got a good one as it shits all over the ruger someone mentioned a zastava ive had one very nice rifle for the price they are big on them in aussie

If you might spend money improving it later then get the 10/22. Even if just a bit here and there. Trigger kits for like $50, bolt buffers and guide rods, etc. So many after market parts/upgrades it's ridiculous.

If you want something as-is out of the box then i'd probably recommend you get something else.

I love my 10/22 but it cost a lot to get it to where I'm happy with it. And it'll probably be an ongoing project.
