Higher pressure at moment of uncorking.

I'm joining the Auckland services rifle association and they shoot Clevedon and Waiuku ranges 1-300 yards
I'll more than likely do some goat shooting only every now and again for pest control.
.308 for fun factor with low frequency of shooting (According to the wife)

    Most likely

To me a 16inch barrel almost suggests short range in which case a Blackout upper on an AR15 maybe the lighter/better option?

If you want the legs of the 308 then really its way heavier and maybe even the 24inch barrel, I wouldnt want to lug that beasty about though.

WSRA (wellington) would normally shoot M16A2 (20inch barrel) or M4 clone (16inch barrel) AR15s, which is why I am getting one. Honestly from shooting a 303 at 100m and from watching ppl shoot semi-auto 308s v ar15s I wouldn't try and compete with one in service rifle. Big, heavy and slow with heaps of recoil, v small, light and fast and almost no recoil.

Im not a hunter so I cant advise on what to shoot goats with, but weight is a bugger.

Yeah, I've tried a few ASRA shoots with a 20" .308 semi and yep, muzzle lift was a pain.
80-90 rounds of .308 ain't cheap either, even when reloading, assuming you can find all the brass.

It rocks on the goats, pigs and turkeys though. Especially the 155gn Amaxes.

All of my ASRA shoots are with a .308 (of sorts) and a 16" barrel.

Bah! It's all I have since I sold my M305... Need those winning numbers to come up and then it'll be FN central.

After going through all of this I ended up with a DPMS pattern gun, just far more accessories are available for them. As for Service Rifle even out to 500 the 223 seems to be able to hold its own against the 308.
