I use synthetic oils like M-Pro 7,Breakfree CLP and Tetra Gun in my AR15 and Mini 14. The most important thing is to dry-patch the barrel before shooting, to prevent an oil ring bulge.
Even a slight bulge can ruin your accuracy...speaking from experience!
Most rifles take about half a dozen shots to settle down and shoot their best after a thorough cleaning. But 40 shots sounds excessive.
