I have a strike eagle. Reticle is to busy for my liking.
gimp has got a VX6 in 1-6x which has a less busy ret and great field if view.
Bit more costly but a nicer/usable scope imo.

3-9 is fine for general hunting but the vortex or VX6 (both v for very nice).. will give you 1 power which is awesome for close moving targets. At the end of the day it boils down to what you want it for.

Yeah the reticle of the Vortex is a little busy but the illumination is useful especial at low power 1-2 using the scope like a red dot sight.

I have a red dot on the side mount for close moving stuff.

If you don't mind the weight and the price the Vortex Razor HD gen2 1-6 would mint on a AR.

+1 on getting a standard 3x9 40. 3 is plenty for the close stuff.

Unless your doing 3gun course sort of close then I would agree that a 2 or 3 power at the bottom end would be fine.
Saves a lot of $ over a good true 1x and allows a more useful top power on a real world budget.

Unless a 1-10 March or the like is within your budget-then you really can have your cake and eat it

What for? I have used them all.

Aimpoint and eotech with a magnifier is great to 300m

Vortex or similar 1-4 - 1-6 good for pretty much everything except varminting.

For all round try leupold mar ar mod 0 in 3-9x40 with mil/mil, or a bit less coin try the bushnell ar optics 3-12.

For varmints go for a Vortex PST 4-16, leupold mk4 or the higher mag (4-18) versions of the above scopes if on a budget.

Whatever you decide make sure you have a decent scope mount that returns to zero and mark the correct torque settings with a paint pen or file so you can torque it up in the bush without a torque wrench.

    Good luck mate.

I have a Leupold VXR 1.25-4×20 for sale. Has SPR reticle and Firedot. Great versatile scope from 0-400m...

I have a IOR 2-12 x 32 on mine. Mind blowing optics, great magnification range, and the illuminated MP-8 reticle is just about right. If there is a downside, it would be that it's not a lightweight scope.
