I looked at it when I was 20 odd and Vern Wilson reckoned that doing a fitter and turners apprenticeship was the story. You would want a good bank balance
after seeing the gear that Arthur has in his workshop

I would like to have my Marlin .22 threaded for a suppressor. Gary at MAE? Anyone else in Auckland recommended?
Arthur did a lot of work for me over the years.
'Did'.... until he did lousy jobs threading my two Sako 75s.
Welcome to Sako club.
DPT in Hamilton - Services - DPT Machinists - and it's a piss easy drive.
Hi team,
Who are the go-to gun smiths on the north shore now?
take it to reloaders the guy they use is extremely good
I get a shit ton of work done by him prices are pretty reasonable aswell
They were stuck in the past
Sure stainless was stonger however waight Is everything these days
No one wants a 600gm suppressor when you can buy one that’s well under half that
They were also expensive compared to other options so im not really surprised they folded
Failure to keep up with the times is a big issue
Mmm at 600 gr I presume you are talking CF?
I had them fit a slim SS to my Marlin 795. It suited that rifle as the rifle had a SS finish plus a 2-7 scope and at 2x the view of the suppressor wasn't too obtrusive.
I'm not sure why Gary M folded but I'm sure there were other factors in play. He had been around for a fair time.
When I went to their factory they were flat out exporting. They wouldn't sell me a suppressor on its own and directed me to Sportways as agents which was a bit of an arse. They would however sell me one if they threaded and fitted it which they did.
I found it to be very efficient. ind you the old PH was as good as any. Would I buy another one of theirs if they were still around - probably for that type of rifle I had but not one of their CF versions.
Incidentally they were very careful to not call their product silencers, a term which was in common use back then. I think this was also due to the UK market sensitivities.
Here's some useless info on suppressors I have -
MAE 22RF SS 205 gr
No Name Alloy POS 60 gr
Hushpro 240 gr
Parker Hale 225 gr
Unique Factory 145 gr
For many years I used the Parker Hale on a 22rf and didn't find weight or length an issue.
I used gary to try and fix some shotguns I had issues with.very helpfull. Many years ago when he was off Wairua rd. As a kid I used to go to the howick gunshop ..main rd howick and droll over all the guns they had.i think he cut his teeth there as a gunsmith back in the day.man those were the days you couldn't have a gun shop like that in a shop like that now.
They used to have a metal tube where they would let us fire .22s down it at the end on a target . That was super cool as a kid growing up . As far as gun smiths I thought there was a guy John hall? Out hellensville somewhere .
Cheers for that - will take it in. I just need a trigger lightened and know that I'll cut the spring wrong haha
Yeah Center fire im taking
Heavy things but they did work well
The issue was even if you weren’t worried about waight the big waight on the muzzle dose affect the balance of the rifle
And makes it stupidly muzzle heavy which is horrible
I feel the lighter the suppressor the better even on a rifle where the actual weight isn’t an issue
Anyone know if John Hall in Helensville is still around in 2024?
