Back from when the NZHS FORUM was born

So going through some reloading gear n rifle stuff today & found an old ( not ancient ) HnF catalog, then I looked at the date it was summer 2011 - 2012 & it occurred to me that this is when the forum came into existence.

I had a gander through to see how prices have risen in 12 years & really not as much as you think ( I know prices ebb & flow & I do recall that things were quite pricey somewhere around this time ) but I did realise that things have either stayed stagnate or we were getting really reamed on these things hahahha

PS - If you're one of these people that love to have a dig at HnF any chance you get, Im just using this as a "moment in time" of what retail prices were like, so go rant elsewhere please.

Any chance you'd post pics of the ammo pages? That's where increases have been somewhat less kind to us.

I think some gear is comparatively cheap or unchanged over the last 20 years

Clothing and footwear maybe better value now . Especially if you wear it out and don't keep buying stuff that catches your eye

Rifles and scopes are always good value because some are a bit of a loss leader.
It's the extras that the retailers make better margins on.
But again if you keep thinking something else is better and will make you a better hunter you will lose a lot of $s

Ammo and reloading components are a huge blip for different reasons and should be seen as that.

Wages and incomes continue to increase, so real world prices are reasonable.

The bottom line for me is I see a lot of guys in the field with some really nice kit.
They are money rich and time poor.
If they did less overtime to buy more gear.
Spent more time in the bush with the perfectly good gear they already have, they would most likely be vastly better hunters and shooters.

With the bonus of being healthier and happier

I just brought a new pair of full shank alpine boots
    $680 on sale for $520
They will not be as good as the worn out hand made Italian ones they are replacing that are on order but a year away !

But even if they only last half as long ( days on hill, not calender years. As I slow down ! ) they will likely be ok value for money.

Once again assuming they get worn out.

Similarly anyone who wears out a rifle from hunting use rather than neglect will have had very good value for money.

Lol at the Eliminator mach 1 "laser scope".
Looking at those rifle prices in light of inflation, we're paying 20% less than back then

Identify your target beyond all doubt because you never miss (right?) and I'll be missed.

    Greetings,
Those scopes look pretty basic compared with what is available today. There is no doubt that there is a lot of flash kit available now that was not 12 years ago but how much of it fills an actual need is another thing altogether.

    @phillipo - awesome! 3 packs of 308 for $120, makes it $40 per pack.or $2 per round.

Flash forward to today, and a pack is $80, so double the cost!

And the Winchester was still made in Oz!

As is said above, it's amazing how some stuff has stayed around the same price with some materials price being far above that of the past. Manufacturing processes have come a long way. I

I'm pretty sure minimum wage would have been about $12 an hour around then in NZ, don't think I have any payslips from then to prove it

    NZD:USD Sept 2012 ~ .817

    NZD:USD Jan 2024 ~ .617

That suggests they were doing relatively well back then?

I got a 10/22 for $350 in 2003-05. just shows that they jumped in price even in that short time.
