Yup the savage mk2s are great little guns, miles ahead of norincos...

I have one in stainless and I had a blued one but it's in my brothers safe now.
Only downside in my opinion are the magazines.

The marlin xt22's are another good choice, with better magazines than the savages. Picked both my savages and marlin sub $350 including scopes and silencers.

Marlin 49DL a delightful little semiauto - if still in good condition. Made around 1968-78 with two piece stock and forend seperated by scroll worked metal receiver. American burr walnut. Very nice semi based on Marlin 60 internals. Slim to handle, 15 shot tube which would need pinning, and very accurate. Typical Marlin semi so needs to be run with action kept clean, almost dry with just a drop on bolt, and with CCI ammos for best cycling. If you can get a good one grab it. Lovely wee 22 - I'd have another if I could find one...

I had a good run with one of these.
as max says .my first rifle was one of these and coupled with a nikko tiara 4x28 scope it was bloody lethal on possums /rabbits-rarely was a second shot required .I later changed to a tasco 4x40 scope for spotlighting and with rabbit ammo /dynapoint round sit was spot on.also have a toz17 -had it for over 40yrs built like a brick shithouse but accurate .currently using shorty model jw 15.

as far as 22's go I would buy 2nd hand if your on a budget your going to get a much better firearm for your money
and 22's just don't wear out
say if you had $400 to spend you could buy a norinco or cbc (rossi in nz)
or 2nd hand you mind find something like a marlin or ruger or of your very lucky a cz/brno
heres a marlin xt22 I just looked for 2 seconds but it in my opinon would be better than the new options for the same money

Well I ended up buying a new Savage MkII from Wilson's in Wanganui. It only cost $359 so cheaper than most of the used ones on TM. I can't pick it up for 3-weeks-ish as I broke my ankle (plate and screws inserted!) hunting 3-weeks ago and still have another 3-weeks in a cast until mobile again. So can't use it anyway. I'm going to put a spare new Nikko Panamax 3-9x40 on it that I have here at home. Just have to change the parralax on it

I want to use it for general rabbit shooting and spotlighting. I do already have a 10/22 but a bolt action is just one less thing to be careful of when spotlighting alone compared to a semi.

I'm going to get a suppressor for it and at this stage am looking at a DPT 22 rimfire suppressor. Is that a sensible option? Also; Best option for bases and rings?

    Cheers for all the advice

I'm curious, could this be why you go under the name 'Bumblefoot'?

The JW-15s can be a lottery but as guys have said, there are quite a few winners. I did one for my nephew years ago and it was a tackdriver. My older son needed one recently and I scored one for near nothing that needed a little TLC. It had been laying in a safe for ? decades and was covered in surface rust. The stock was pretty good, other than being made from heart of rhubarb. The gun itself must have had a bit of use as the action was pretty smooth. Anyway, gave her the once-over and had a quick play with Birchwood Casey cold blue paste. The borescope showed no major flaws, particularly rust.

So next question was how would she shoot?

Here's the group after I got the zero roughly right- that's four through one small hole and can't explain why the other one. Bear in mind the --crappy- 4X scope was totally obscuring the aiming mark

( Excuse the faulty pic upload- dunno what happened there??)

mate had the fully suppressed barrel savage and it was a honey of a rifle to shoot...very quiet even with supersonics (not sure HOW that works but it does) trigger was nice and it sure was accurate.

The 'fully suppressed' shorty ones actually have a ported barrel under the full length suppressor that drops supersonics to subsonic speed. I think they made them for places where subsonic ammo isn't as common as it is here.

I have one and it was done in Auckland. Can't recall the outfit, was maybe 20yrs ago. I don't think it's any quieter than std cans and certainly not as quiet as a suppressed bolt gun. There's probably noise that escapes out the action.
