I would look at the CZ 452, it has lovely balance and very well made. They still run the screw in barrels ( not pinned ) and are well proven in terms of accuracy and time.
It will out last you and be something to hand on to grand kids.

They are going to be phased out by the new 455 CZ so nows the time to grab one while you can, I have seen them new for around the 800 - 900 mark.

Others to consider : Early model Bruno ( not as slick as 452 ) . Ansultz shoot well but action feels to small for my hands. If you can find a nice Krico which are made in Austria they are very accurate rifles as well.

Or you could go like me and run a semi and also a bolt action. I got a used Norinco JW15 A which is a shameless Bruno clone and it's a awesome little machine. Shoots as well as my sons CZ and cost $200 used. Early ones seem to be better but there are a lot of guys on this forum running them and they perform way above their price tag.

I enjoy running both guns. The bolt guns the work horse but fun to break out the semi every now and then.

I'm off CZs they ain't Brnos! There's a very nice new Weihrauch at H&F Taupo, I think abou $14-1500 better action than the cheaper Anshultz and lot better than a CZ, I have two Brno mod 2 they are really nice, I think the Anshultz is more accurate but you need the mod 54? Action. You get all this with a Weihrauch and more! JMHO

i went from a s/s 10/22 to the ruger american 22. Am not a target shooter. have found it accurate enough for what i want it for shooting possum, rabbits hares etc. plenty of head shots etc don't usually shot past 40m as am running subs.. only one jamb and that was from a bit of possum fur.
I was in the same boat not so long ago was going buy a cz but have no regrets getting the ruger. Also the modular stock appealed to me as i hope to get the compact modular later on for my young fella.

what I would probably do is hit the range with all barrels and work out exactly how much and where to adjust for each barrel
once that's done you could change barrels and adjust scope as part of the barrel change process without firing a shot

I'd have to disagree with that. Never experienced a CZ as slick as my 1950's Brno's and I've had a couple of CZ's.

CZ aren't as well finished as the older genuine Brno's but for the money they're good value and just as accurate. Agreed what you say about the Anschutz 54 action rifles and the Weihrauch. Maca, I've got a mate who calls an Anschutz an Anshultz too.

Yes there is Zastava and they make rather good 22s, but the Winchester wildcat is not a Zastava. The Winchester WildcatI is actually a Toz 78. Winchester did not even bother to get them without Toz stamped in the receiver. They just had their name stamped on the other side by Toz. I would have mentioned Toz earlier but we have sold out of the bolt action for now, and the 78 does not come up very much on trade me second hand . The Toz 17s do but they are circa mid 70s and not really what the OP wants. (Unless he is looking for an accurate 22 that he cannot get magazines for...)
I have a Toz 78 myself and they are very accurate. If one is available then it it well worth looking at. It will be sometime before we get more in but it will happen.

Gents, thanks for all of the advice. Looking like I'll be seriously considering the CZ, Anshutz, and possibly the Ruger. I appreciate the further refinement that some of the options present but I'm not realistically going to spend in excess of $1000 on a .22. Now comes the fun part of finding a new addition to the safe and passing along the 10/22 to someone a bit more keen on a semi.

I have a CZ455. I can tell you that barrel swapping between calibres is not that useful in practice. Everytime you switch between calibres you need to sight in again. If you got your own range in your backyard then it is all good. Otherwise it is a pain to go back to a proper range to do sighting in every time before you use the new calibre.

The appeal of CZ455 is that you can upgrade the barrel yourself. In the USA a lot of people buy Lilja barrels for their CZ455, instant competition class rifle for half the price of Annie. But if you do not intend to do that ever, then there is no point in buy a CZ455 over a 452.

Weihrauch rimfire rifles feel awesome, but my goodness they are heavy, just something to consider.

I love my CZ 452 American, I bought a Yo dave trigger kit and now the trigger feels great.
Have shot rabbits out too 110 yards with it and shot plovers at 150 yards using subsonics.
I was shooting 2 inch and 4 inch steel plates out at 150 yards just the other day.

The fit and finish of the rifle if great, the only bad thing was the trigger but the Yo dave kit fixed that.
