It will be full of smd's and probably not obvious. Sounds to me like its been dropped.

It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.

First rule of lending. DONT
I've experienced the same and people just piss you off!
Boom, cough,cough,cough
I once was asked by a friend to lend him my very expensive Leica slide projector. Next day he tells me to come and pick it up because it stopped working after only five slides and he was pissed off because all his family were looking forward to an evenings viewing. I could see that they had placed two slides in a slot meant for one and obviously used brute force and ignorance to force the slide mechanism when it jammed. Cost me $280 plus two trip to Aucks and three months waiting for parts etc. this was in 1984. A buck was worth about three times at least from what is now. Mentioned the cost several times to the wrecker and he completely refused to pay.
So now I don't lend anything.
my bid was just for fun. the general rule of thumb in my industry is if it cost less than $2k retail and fails "under warranty" then its a straight replacement. After that not repairable..
I am so glad I got out of consumer electronics repairs 15 years ago
have you tried contacting the manufacturer or local distributor Puku

Consider yourself lucky, if it had broken while in your use you could only blame yourself...this way you get to rant and rave at someone else.
Surely these things can take a drop or two without crapping out...dropped in the paddock is nothing like being bounced off the concrete wall.
Which is worse, ignorance or apathy...I don't know and don't care.

Like rushy said you would hope not. But I have a feeling that it was left on the seat of the truck and a big Cresent on hammer was placed on it.
That would be his style, of course he would be completely ignorant to the fact he had just put the range finder there two minutes before!

Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Right well I have tried several new batteries in the device. Once it has turned on, but then we couldn't get it to measure. Then it shut off.
And won't turn back on.
Looks like it rooted, and the farm is going to buy a new one (it shouldn't be because that means its coming out of all of our pockets but....)
So what is the recommendations for a decent one that won't cost shite loads but is good for 1000m or so

Yukon, dude is in Nelson, super helpful and offers a 3 year warrenty, any issues and he will replace it straight away. PM @Yukon if he is still on here and will do you a deal.
I lent mine to @kimjon to test against others including Leica and then he went out and brought one.

I looked at the Yukon, but only seem to come in meters. I still work in the pounds, shillings and pence system.
