I'm putting this together with a delta hd 1-6, howa 308 12.5 inch heavy barrel muzzel forward dptso no light weight but balanced and with the extra weight less muzzel flip, and capable of longer shot strings if blasting goats etc
I've got one of these in 308., it was $2600 when I got the package a few years ago. The new fluted ones look nice too.

Shoots great out the box and can shoot comfortably out to 250m as is, durable and hardy in the bush.
My lightweights.![]()
This would be a nice option.

Remember in this case the OP wants something “cheaper than a Tikka” and he already has a medium varipower scope. It has to tolerate dirt and rain well.
Go to your local Gun Shops and have a look at the secondhand stock. I know in Invercargill there would probably be 50+ suitable rifles. Benefit of this is that you get to shoulder the rifle, you may find what you want already done, gunsmith may offer to shorten to shift the stock and you never know what may take your fancy.
I really like this idea. A second hand should be 2/3 the price of new so you step up a level in quality.
Seeing as its your rainy day short range backup rifle its not so critical if there was a minor fault like a hidden ring bulge or burred screw slot.
What you see is what you get will be fine and you get to feel them all.
I just picked up a bergara ba13 in 300blk for a bush gun, accurate and a nice handy length.
Bergara ba13, stainless, takedown, accurate, short.
ruger ranch .223 factory 16" threaded barrel,Talleys extra lows, dpt.very light weight, will shoot sub moa, very friendly on wallet, can abuse in the bush.or if want a bit more more punch a predator in .308.Ranch models dont come in .308
If it’s only a bush gun, any cheap second hand ss rifle will do the job. Remington, Howa, etc etc doesn’t have to be super accurate, but most factory rifles are pretty good these days anyway. Some thing with a faster twist so you can sling some heavies lead tips around if you wanted, although after seeing the .223 thread in here, anything from there up to whatever caliber would be sweet.
Grab a DPT. Tried and trusted all over this forum, good support locally, not that I’ve ever seen one fail. Plus you can give them a decent clean.
