    Cheers
@Phil_H I found them slow killers unless I hit bone say front leg/shoulders. Granted if you were running them in a 300WM at 300fps faster than my 308 they might do better but I just wasn't happy with how I could shoot em behind the leg (heart-ish/lung shot) and they would turn around and bolt like 100m. I much prefer a cup and core bullet, goes in the ribs, blows up and shreds everything in the chest cavity - boom - down like a sack of shit.
Ranges where between 50m and I would say 150m max...

So a "slow" heavy bullet seems the most appropriate for the task it will scrub bust and if the opportunity presents for a longer shot it's not too hard to compensate for a small amount of drop.
A 308 with 180 grain bullets would be pretty good I think. I have been hunting with a guy who shot a pig at 220 yards and a deer at 30 with a 3030 on the same trip. Trajectory is easy to compensate for if and when you need to. Usually there is plenty of time available when taking longer shots as opposed to the spook n shoot when you have to take what's on offer in that situation possibly shooting through stuff I can't see a fast as fuck bullet brings anything to the party. What the duleys did I think was apply conventional rifle thinking to a short barrel version keeping flat trajectory at the top of the list and to my mind that not what a bush pig is about.
that is exactly why I have been using the 45/70 with 18 inch barrel. 325 grains travelling at around 2000fps still leaves a big hole and instant drop , rarely do they move far . The only reason I am going to a 308 bushy is less noise with a supressor and less drop at longer ranges. Also the sbl is a heavy piece of kit even with green dot pistol sight and not that confidant on longer shots with that sight system and rainbow trajectory. No problem at all out to 100m though. The 308 even with supressor and scope will still be lighter than the mighty sbl.

this is worth a watch....what is a brush gun

Ok OK so to follow up I run some numbers, I used inexpensive ammo from the same manufacturer, $46.00 Each per 20 rounds from Gunworks. loaded in similar ways (As close as you can get between two calibers)

.308 Winchester, 150 Grain SUPER X Muzzle velocity of 2820 FPS
.270 Winchester, 150 Grain SUPER X Muzzle velocity of 2850 FPS

For these purposes as I could not find it on the winchester site we will assume test barrel to be 24" this is pretty common I believe.

My research also found that a 150gr .270 lost an average of 32 FPS per 1 inch of barrel

And a .308 150gr lost an average of 22.7 FPS per 1 inch of barrel

So chopping to a 19" barrel for both would yield you.
.308 113.5 FPS loss of speed
.270 160 FPS Loss of speed

I will post the ballistic charts from my phone to follow.
    Very interesting.

So I guess my conclusion is doesn't matter which one you have the specs are to close to worry about changing.
The Poooseventy definitely has a factory advantage with the better ballistics Vs price like for like.
I think the .308 would win out if reloading because of the better range of projectiles and it seems to take less powder to to do similar things to the .270 but we are only talking 10gr ish Max difference.

I think I will still try to trade the .270 Not for ballistic reasons (Because see above Haha)
But because it is set up as a nice medium-long Range rifle nice muzzle brake and barrel fluting.
And trading it to someone for a Bush Pig is a lot less work for the both of us.

Cheers for everyone's input I enjoyed the topic.

bear in mind though you can also run the 180gr in the 308 and the larger diameter round will still make a larger hole. And I am a believer that speed isn't everything. If the animal catches the bullet rather than a pass through then ALL the energy is dumped into the target rather than what it sheds on it's way through before exiting out the other side.
But that's just my way of thinking.....

    165gr at 2400fps in my 14.5” .308.
Super accurate to 500y and easy to shoot

That's a good sensible job @MSN I hope it's supressed because it will be loud and quite bright at twilight.

just reread the original post...spotted somethin I missed first time around....you have 24" barrel with a LOUDENER on it...no wonder you dislike the poohseventy so much.....that hurts my ears just reading it.... beg borrow or steal a suppressor with correct thread and try it......guarantee you will be blown away by difference as apposed to being blown away from muzzleblast....

The 270 is. 007 small than the 284 and has a virtually identical case capacity as the 284 which is considered one of the best bushpig calibres all round. The thing that conti ues to hamper the 270 is shit twist rates and shit bullet selection. If using factory go the 308, the 7mm08 or dare I say it the 6.5 creed. Run the numbers for a 130 gr eld m or berger hybrid at 2700 from a 16 inch 6.5 creed and see how that matches up with your numbers.

The .270 is a good cal and can't go wrong with it running a suppressor. Imo there's no better all round caliber than the .308 for all NZ hunting, velocity isn't too high for close range bush hunting and still having plenty of legs out to 500y and beyond, the 168gr eldm going 2670 out of my 18" sako has stepped the old girl up, has over 1000 ft-lbs of energy out to 700y, pretty impressive for the old .308. When it comes to hunting stags in the bush during the roar the .308 definitely has the advantage over anything with the heavier 180gr bullets going at a modest speed.

I've only ever shot 2 .270's, one was a tikka t3 and the other a m695, both had very mild recoil but the m695 was a real pleasure to shoot! The 130's out the of the .270 suppressed kick bugger all compared to 165's out of my weighted sako 75 .308. I once stood behind a savage axis .270 with no suppressor, loudest rifle I've ever heard next after that would be the .25/06.
