My 7/08 has an 18" barrel. I shoot 120gr Ballistic tips at 3000fps from it. It is not my main hunting rifle but has taken about 4 deer from 70 - 200yds. All 1 shot kills.

The 303 Jungle Carbine's barrel was 18". That's the benchmark. Flash-hider, optional.
Shot my first deer with a Jungle Carbine using the battle aperture sight and 20yr old CAC ammunition.
Bush Hobbits Short Rifle......is a much betterer term...a bushpig is an ugly sheilah from the next town!!!!
I like carbine usually if something is refered to as a pig its a nicer way of saying piece of shit
Here's a link to some longer-range bushpigs in .308... https://rifleshooter.com/2015/02/the...-action-rifle/
.5 moa at 500 yards is nothing to laughh at with a 16" bushpig. Sorry - tactical carbine.
Nice, young fella!
Shot my first with a .303 too, back in 1977. Ammo was some good old Forest Service modified military stuff. Mine came from the NZFS 'EF' (Environmental Forestry) workshop in Tremaine Ave in Palmerston North, where some poor sod used to get the task of drilling ex-military 174 gn solids to turn them into hollow points. They worked!
It's one of those pictures where you can see two or three things and your mind switches between them,
I keep thinking of an MG-42...then of my dog when she wanted to play.. then of a bolt action winchester.

What you have heard of the bullet not stabilising below 20" is not true. You can go as short as 15" if you like and it will be fine (assuming your suppressor will still fit without hitting the stock). Just shoot the appropriate type of bullet/load for the short barrel. The difference between 308 and 7mm08 is negligible. Just chop your 7mm08 and you will be away laughing.
I have a 15 inch 708, works just fine with 120 or 140gr pills. I'd be more than happy taking a 400 yd shot on a deer especially with 140s.
I also have a t3 (was 708) cut to 17 inch and reamed the chamber out to 284 win. It's an awesome allrounder than can push a sleek high bc 162gr bullet at a speed that retains enough energy in theory to perform well on deer to 800 yards.
What you have will be just fine
The carbine is basically a shortened rifle.
The original Magazine Lee Enfield rifle MLE (aka Long Tom) had a 30.2-inch (770 mm) barrel.
The SHORT MLE had a 25.2 inches (640 mm) barrel but was still called a rifle.
In between, the MLE derived Lee–Enfield Cavalry Carbine Mk I, or LEC, had a 21.2-inch (540 mm) barrel.
All pretty subjective. I suspect most modern hunting rifles nowadays would fall into the carbine category. Less advantage of a long sight radius if you have optical sights, or if stalking bush pigs (optical or iron sights).
I suppose you have a carbine once your rifle is so short and handy it does not catch on stuff all the time.

Whats wrong with a marlin or 94 winnie lever action for bush work? If 250 is your self imposed limit they tick all the boxes and the 170 gr flat point was designed to work pretty well at low speed and not be too worried about the odd twig in the way unlike a wizzbang racing bullet.
I hear you Marty Henry, I'd love to you use my Winchester 94 over the dog but it wouldn't be fair on her ears.
That 94 is such a sweet rifle to carry and point and knocks em over well too. Never pushed it past 150 though, But I imagine it would still perform
out to 200. I'm thinking I might have to move to 170 grainers. They seem to be the ticket over the 150's?
