Using what powder? I can’t get near that speed in my 19 inch barrel with R17.

if you don't reload the 308 would be your best bet unless your trying to make a fashion statement

I won't be looking to shoot Sambar at 600yards, 300 max, just thought if I was to ever get into an area with that sort of country then at least it's there.

If you don't reload yourself there are various people around that will do custom handloads for you. Not reloading yourself doesn't have to limit you to use factory ammo

6:1 half dozen the other mate. I like the 284 as it punches 7mm slugs and it's different from my favourite the 308. 308 or 284 at 17" is a neat rig and will do everything you need it to.
Just google and read mate, I've had 308, 284, 280ai and 7RM among others smaller and I'd say apart from a Saum the 284 and 308 are just best for intended purpose.
As for the S&B mate, na I'd keep her as you know what you've got, Z3 are light but hey your rifle should be light anyways.

284 or saum would be my pick, but you need to hand load or get someone to load for you.

No reloading 308 all the way.
Reloading then 30-284 seeing as you like 30 cal and would certainly have the grunt for Sambar.

300saum seems more efficient in a short barrel than a 300wsm. Less powder, better velocity.

Mine is 20" and getting an easy 3150 with 150 Barnes and 2970 with 168 NBT. Whats not to like? Thats good from close to 800 yards if you are that way inclined.

Built on a A7 its 6lb bare with the original stock. Cost me $2.1k all up with a Hardy barrel. Its my ideal all rounder. And I've tried the odd one.
