Buying a scope overseas while on holiday

Can someone tell me if this is possible. Would be nice to duck in to a gun shop and look for cool stuff while away overseas. What is the situation on doing this these days? Is it viewed as part of a firearm? Once upon a time you could simply declare it and pay import tax if needed. Now I suspect a full import licence might be needed. Advice appreciated. Thanks

If you know what you would be looking for, apply for the import permit before you go. Otherwise you might need another holiday to get rid of the stress again...

go down to magnum imports and get them to get it for you......sure it will/may cost you a few extra $$$$ but thats for thier time and hassle doing it..... you know support the little local guy so he stays in business and is there when you need something else in a hurry.

I bought a VX3i in Canada and bought it back in my check in. No questions asked when I came in to NZ. That was Christmas last year though.....

I bought a scope in from Aussie in my checked in baggage also recently.
I admit I was a little apprehensive going through customs but turned out to be a non-issue.

Of course if you don't declare an expensive scope that could attract GST I don't know how you might get on!

Watch out for Auckland customs, they can be fucking arseholes. Brother in law bought in 5 mags for a rifle a few weeks ago when returning from a trip to the US (he had a permit for 9 but could only buy 5), they grilled him for ages and made him empty everything out looking for more items (which they never found), and even tried searching the waist band of my mothers undies - my mum is 87 and was in a wheel chair.

Depending on country you can get tax back to. Got scopes in oz and south Africa, and got tax back leaving there.
