it's 300BLK. Ammo brand is Hornady... same problem when I tried some American eagle which had also previously worked fine

    Ahhh... okay.
    What make barrel?
I would try to colour a case with a vivid and try to chamber to see where it is causing the issue.
I suspect either the chamber is not to modern 300 BLK specs (I recall there were differences in earlier 300 specs), so the headspace (shoulder), case neck thickness or even the projectile is getting driven into the rifling early that is causing the problem.
Either way, it sounds like a trip to a gunsmith to check.

Did you get it from NZRAC? As John should be good to deal with if you are having issues.

nah bought it off here, was unused at the time. Not sure how old it was but I think it's fairly new.

After a good dose of strong solvents it seems to be closing up again... hopefully it's fixed. Out of curiosity, how tight in a chamber should a bullet actually be? I've never bothered to actually test it but always imagined that if inverted the bullet would slide out under gravity... seems like it's actually quite a tight fit in there?

There is a bit of a squeeze so the projectile bites into the rifling.

I doesn't sound right to me.
a military rifle should be able to run on a handfuls of mud and bullets not need extensive cleaning after 20 rounds.
I suggest a trip to the gunsmith.

Took it out for a spin tonight and cycled like a dream.... guess it just had a fine layer of gunk messing with it. Weird but seems fine now
