    Chopping HMR Barrel

    Gidday

Has any learned person on here chopped a 17 HMR barrel? Looking at taking about 4-5 inches off and re-threading for suppressor. It already wears one. It's just a bit long for getting in and out of vehicles while spotlighting. Is there much of a loss of velocity and what could the barrel be shorten to without adversely affecting velocity.

    Thanks all. Hot barrels everone

If you google it, you will find a couple of tests performed on chopping verse velocity. Essentially 18" is optimum for the 17HMR.

My Weihrauch is fairly short, cannot remember length off the top of my head, but still gets out with excellent accuracy to 180. Has a Mae over barrel

STREWTH mate.... I have the 5 shot mag bolt action and the 10 shot semi auto HMR 17,s..... not sure I could do that to any of them.... the stats I’ve seen say the barrels are at optimum length .i will admit with out a suppressor it has a nasty crack to it,.... good earplugs are my suppressor....... be interested to see the results if you do the cut

Well maca49..... that’s some interesting stuff...the results from 10in 22 in are surprising.... would never have guessed that the performance was not adversely affected

Longest ranged shot with this rig 184metres, flat paddock with a GRASSY knoll, knocked over 4 rabbits, one after the other, weather conditions were perfect, I love this rifle and its the fourth Ive owned.
Weighs 4 tonne with the Night force

    Ammo used...???........I use Hornady V-max 17 gr,polymer tipped stuff.....little spendy,but well worth it...
I reckon it makes sense to shorten the barrel to “specialize” the gun for what you need,no argument there.Took the time to google various articles about shortening the HMR 17 barrels, seems this rifle holds up well, and it’s ballistics,to a certain degree. In Kiwi,I can see where this would come in very handy.Reckon you learn something everyday....
