I really like the sound of a lightweight Tramping Rifle that can be shouldered quickly when you see that tasty critter looking at you from 30 yd off the track.

Personally don't see much point in having the rifle in your pack, in 3 separate parts (unless it's a .22 you going to use for blatting possums around the hut after dinner).

The Bergara is a nice rifle. Haven't seen the Henry but looks good... although might need some surgery to lighten it up.

Chiappa does takedown 1892's in 357, though they personally aren't my favorite manufacturer.

I always wondered about just unscrewing the stock on a rossi 92 357 magnum for pack carry. I think its only 5lbs. the 16" barrel version is about 83cm long from memory, take another 25cm for the stock you get say 58-60cm which will fit in a longish 35L daypack or anything larger. For snap shots with a red dot you can still aim okay like this as the 357 has buggar all recoil in a rifle. Its not legal to fire it without the stock attached in Australia but just for interests sake. Also unsure how it works for you guys. There is enough force between your grip on the forend and the master hand to also be able to work the lever without the stock on too. I have tried it during cleaning. The other issues would be making sure to keep the exposed springs clean during carry and whether unscrewing and screwing the stock will eventually loosen it.

I like this idea. Wonder if you could replace the screw with a push pin...

I like my TC G2. 223. Drill a hole in the cap at bottom of pistol grip and she breaks down with a Allen key.
Pictured at 3.8kg. Would be easy to get it to 3.3kg with a non mag suppressor, smaller scope and lighter rings.

Not sure I traded into this one. There was one on TM last month for sale, I think it was around $1500 with a scope.
One in a short barreled 308 would be awesome I reckon.

Another option for the OP, Franco Pedretti folding rifle in 357 magnum. I think built of a single folding shotgun frame. Very rare though, but not expensive. One just sold on an Aus classifieds for about $650.

Can the Rossi lever actions be made into takedowns like the "Alaskan Guide Gun's" - thats a very simple takedown system . . .

The fellas at Rossi Rifleman forums would have the best idea. The price of the work might make it more worthwhile to get a 1892 winchester takedown or the chiappa from the start. Thats just a guess though.

I know the term 'agricultural' gets thrown around a lot on here in regards to the Baikal stocks, but with a bit of work that can look quite nice. This is my .308 Baikal. Buddy of mine did all of the work on the stock before I bought it off him. I've got one in .270 with a synthetic stock as well.Name: 13647193_1054941531260262_757983924_o.jpg

Another option could be something like a Ruger American Compact. Mine with the suppressor off fits inside my pack, could even cut it another couple of inches shorter so the suppressor comes back to the stock. Certainly a lot more accurate than both the single shot break downs I have owned.

I has a Ruger Compact in .223 a few years ago. It was very light and handy but lively to say the least. Even with a suppressor on. Either it didn't fit me or something but I never could get it to group very well. The stock was akin to wet pasta in terms of flexibility. That may not have helped matters.

    Buy 223nuts single shot.
