Thread: Considering upgrading from 7mm08 to possibly 270 or something else

I own a 7mm-08 and a 270, both Winchester Model 70s. I only bought the 270 because it was a flasher version of the same rifle I already had and loved and it was going for a good price. Not because I wanted a 270 in particular. I've tucked it away for future use for when my poor old rusty 7mm-08 finally gets too embarrassing to use. In practical terms, these rifles do pretty much the same thing and there's no hunting or shooting I personally do where a 270 provides any advantage over a 7mm-08. In theory a 270 has marginally less drop, but you need to get out to unrealistic hunting ranges where you would be using a dedicated long range calibre anyway.

    Greetings @GlennJ,

From this and your previous post I think that you have decided current 7mm-08 fills your needs so if you are not there already perhaps handloading might be considered. The 7mm-08 is one of the easier cartridges to load for. I don't think that either the .270 or the 7mm Rem Mag would provide any benefit for the type of hunting you do and likely less than that with a heavier rifle and more recoil.

    Regards GPM.

Maybe a sign that some maturity is creeping in to the place.

I'd just run the 7mm08 with reloads.
It'll do the job on game, past the distances you've mentioned.
Use the $$$ you were gonna use on that 270 and invest in a decent scope.
Far better upgrade than going to 270

    ^ this.

Money into dial-able optic and potentially some modest reloading gear and deer well past 300m better watch out. Ill happily take ethical shots out to 450 with my 708 which in most hunting situations is a long way.

If you want a significant upgrade, go to 7mm rem mag.
@mawzer308 You just quoted our exact loads eh, except I use Amax. Although you are right and I agree, we both know my 7mm08 is cooler deep down.

Don't overthink it. Stick with the humble 7mm08, upgrade the stock on the howa, plenty of options to do so. For a scope honestly look out for a second hand 2-12 or 4-12 leupold or Burris etc with good glass. You won't regret it. If you need help with it flick me a pm as I'm happy to help people out on here. Unless they go dog ya like a certain Australian with a YT channel has done from here.

Went through the same conundrum a couple of months ago.

708 was doing okay but wanted a bit lighter and something that would take the knocks in the bush.

Ended up getting a Kimber in 280AI.

The truth is the extra speed of the 280AI isn't going to make any difference at the distance I shoot.

What I have learnt though is that the feel and fit of the rifle is a game changer.

If you want a new rifle , go and get one. My advice is worry less about the cartridge it comes in and more about how a particular rifle feels in your hands and fits to your shoulder.
