I run a couple of Shadows my primary is +100k of rounds, my back up around 15k. I like them for several reasons. The weight and ergonomics suit me, there are a lot of production legal after market products. Enough accessories are produced by various companies (no point having some oddball pistol that no-one makes a holster for).
Negatives, it requires a little more TLC than some...my Shadows tend to gum up at about 500 rounds if not cleaned which leads to an obvious solution. As even the biggest matches in NZ are unlikely to be more than 300 rounds over three days something has gone badly wrong if you don't find the time to clean the pistol. There are certain parts that are renowned for breaking on the Shadow, slide stops and trigger springs. It is a good idea to have a "competition" and practice slide stops and swap them out accordingly. When a "competition" slide stop gets a few rounds under its belt (keep a log) make it a "practice/club shoot" slide stop. Carry spares of the above and spare fiber optics (and the lighter etc to fit it). I have an ability to break/destroy things so some of the destruction I've done is not typical.
I'd possibly buy a Xcaliber if I was going to replace my Shadows. They shoot really well and fit my hand well, just the trigger isn't as nice as the Shadow's. It is lighter and with a couple of dodgy shoulders it might work better for me.
As mentioned there is an approved list of pistols for IPSC production class, if in doubt check. Production is still the biggest division in New Zealand probably because it is financially and logistically the most accessible. A lot of the master graders that used to shoot production have moved on to other divisions though (Classic got a lot of them). The decocking is just a matter of getting used to, at this point I'm probably almost too blasé about it, but I've yet to have a UD doing it. You can shoot a Shadow in minor in Standard but you are going to make life hard for yourself, I think my Tanfoglio shooting .40S&W major holds 19 rounds, the Shadow holds 19 rounds minor. Doable but...
I don't experiment with loads I use 4.2 gr. AP50, 124 g. Rusa flatnose projectiles and Federal small pistol primers. It isn't the nicest powder but it is cheap and reliably available. The load could be worked on but it cycles and is accurate enough and makes power factor.
I use a magnet on the front pouch, useful for table starts and picking up peoples magazines when walking through patching and scoring. It helps to practice with them as with mine the point to which I grab the magazine is an inch or so forward of where I normally index to.
