    Dual purpose scopes

    Hey all,

After some advise on a dual purpose hunting and long rage scope for a 6.5 Creedmoor in a hunting stock. This will be a dual purpose rifle for a bit of long range shooting and be my go to hunting rifle for the moment.

Not sure which way to go regarding size and weight? For the range roughly a 5-25/50mm would be ideal I think, just not sure how I would go lugging it around hunting? Anyone else here carry a bigger optics with them hunting? I have never owned a scope that big before.

FFP and around $1000-$1500 in Mil is my preference, are there any lighter weight LR options out there that are durable enough and can be managed on longer hikes through the bush and suit LR preferences at the same time? Or should I go smaller as I am leaning more to LR optics at the moment?

It will defiantly be shot more at the range, though it will be carried way more than anything else lol

    Cheers

Only I don't think they come in mil, but don't worry MOAS are just as easy to work with

fitted one of these to my 308 bush rifle and find it excellent , but primarily for short range bush hunting .

what sort of ranges are you expecting to hunt at?

my 338 long range and hunting rifle wears a vx6hd (out of your price range I realise) that if I remember correctly is 4-24 with 50mm objective . it is a little heavier but I find it does both jobs , hunting and long range out to 1km fine . The rifle is a hardy carbon job though so lightweight for calibre . Around 4.5 kg all up from memory

Perfect and you still have 3 hours to bid on a brand new scope...

Hey @Ftx325, hunting range would be inside 200/300m tops and most shots would be taken within much shorter distances than that I would imagine, though I really want to get sharper and more confidant on longer shots and want to push out targets (paper/metal) much, much further. I know what I'm like and will probably geek out on shooting LR targets lol and buying once would be ideal.

    Cheers

well the 338 has taken fallow at ranges as close as 130 mtr at low 4x mag and shot out at 600mm and 300mm square targets 1 km at 24x mag .
as mentioned 3-15 x 44 is a great size for all round hunting but if you intend to shoot long long range at smaller targets you may struggle to see them clearly .
if you want it primarily for hunting the lower start magnification is a bonus as even 5x mag can reduce field of view considerably at shorter ranges and make it a pain to find the target in a hurry.
Really it's up to you which you value more in magnification as most of the higher mag range scopes start at 5x....
and generally they are heavier and quite a bit bigger when sat side by side which can be a pain when hunting.

I would serious consider not going with a scope with 5x as the minimum zoom if you are based up north and its your only hunting rifle as up close 5x is still a lot for any standing shots or quick target acquisition.

Of course they are Danny ....it's blindingly obvious that 1 centimetre at 100 meters is much more difficult to deal with than 1.047 inches at 100 yards

It's a tricky one alright. Top end mag vs low enough bottom end, maybe zero stop, illumination vs price.
I could be wrong but going ffp and mil might limit your options a bit.
I would look at options like Weiss has. Think it can be 3-15 or 5-25 but would be second hand in your price range. Sightron stac 4-20, Leopold vx5, meopta6 3-18,
The burris mentioned above and the delta scopes @Sarvo does. Might be something in your range
