I tend to think the more all round scope you want the better glass you should have
what I mean is the old adage "if you can see it you can hit it"
Better glass and a good reticle means lower magnification is needed therefore less bulk though not necessarily lighter, eg PM11 3-12x50

I could be wrong but going ffp and mil might limit your options a bit.
I would look at options like Weiss has. Think it can be 3-15 or 5-25 but would be second hand in your price range. Sightron stac 4-20, Leopold vx5, meopta6 3-18,
The burris mentioned above and the delta scopes @Sarvo does. Might be something in your range
The Delta Titanium HD 4-24×50 SFP Illuminated - with Interchangeable Turrets - would be perfect

@Stocky yeah mate slight over sight on my part and worth consideration.
@Remmodel7 thanks for your input & good info, happy to stretch my budget for the right scope but don't want to go too crazy. Scopes like Arken getting really good reviews for the coin (if you can get one) I'll check out what you and others have suggested, thanks again. @55six @Sarvo @jakewire Cheers!

I have a VX5 3-15x44 firedot duplex. I have used it on my 24" bbl 7mmRM and my 16"bbl 308 at ranges from 10m to 450m. It is a great versatile scope.

Don't overscope your rifle. You will regret it as mucks with balance I find. I have one rifle that does everything from bush bashing as well as being capable out to 500m but majority of shooting is 50-300m. Went with the burris signature hd 2-10 but if I had a 1500 budget I would be looking for a second hand z5, vx5/vx6 etc in the 2-10/12 power range. Have used high power scopes before and even shooting moa targets out to a km i found 15-18 power enough

Cheers sarvo. When funds allow I think that will be top of the list.
@Shot Bro I have a van HD on my all round rifle. 3-18. Picked it up second hand. Think it's a pretty good all round scope. Some people say you only need 12 or 15 top end but I like my mag

I have a Sightron S111 2.5-10 that is a good dual purpose scope. It has superb optics (in a "last light" test recently it beat out all my other scopes) and while some people would think a 10x max power is a limitation - its not, higher power is useful but not essential for both hunting and target shooting. I've had both a VX5 3-15 and a Swaro Z5 3.5-18, sold them both because there are "more useful" scopes out there that are better use of my (and yours) hard earned $$

+1 for the Delta I sold my VX 5 to get the Delta taitainum 4x24 for my Tikka .260 it's awesome for long range and still fine up close.
Yes it's a big scope but I've got used to it and we'll worth the money.

see your dilemma. NI bush hunting you ideally want a bottom end of 2-3x (or less) and keep it wound down. lots of guys have missed an opportunity when something jumped out up close and the scope was still wound up.
But a 6.5 CM was made for mid range shooting 3-800 mtr so you still need enough scope for that.

time to get a second bush basher, 20" barrel or less and set up for sub 300 mtr hunting with a 1-6 or 2-10 type scope.
only needs to be a 2 Moa capable unit so cheap and fun.

just not sure if a 15-18x zoom is enough at 800 mtr, hence you may end up with a 5x bottom zoom and that is going to cost you in missed animals in the bush or low light plus the 2eight and size of a 5-25 type scope.

+1, I'm going to borrow the term 'overscope' from now on.

Used to have an S&B PM2 Ultra Short 5-20X50, sold it and got a Leupold Mk4 3.5-10X40, much happier!
