    Cheers mate, yeah that's what I hear but I can't get a yay or nay on exactly what their process is. They seem to be acting on some new shadowy directive.

    Yes, have some understanding and sympathy for them when dealing with them. In addition to dealing with the law itself, they fear stepping out of line. Police forces are extremely top-down paramilitary organisations.

    This point I am not so sure about, would be good to get some other opinions.

    I suspect you are going down a slippery slope by thinking it changes legal type simply by swapping magazines. The serial number is what is recorded when it is converted to E, and until that serial number is converted back to A, I would treat the firearm as E, irrespective of what magazine is inserted.

    That sounds like the safest option.
