What I glean from this conversation, is hold off as long as you can.

Spoke to Hutt Police Firearms Officer yesterday about triggering events as I have moved address - he said that he would try to get t in before the cutoff time

I asked how will I know if I need to register or not


He got back to me later and said that the registry team would email me if there is a triggering event and I would have to register after that

I still haven't got a clear answer on the need to register collectors/pistols and whether or not that is atriggering event for the rest

Or what the timeline is for needing to do so


So far everything is going absolutely perfectly clear

Sounds like it. My licence is up for renewal toward the end of 2025, but there are a number of rifles I'd like to quit before then so guess I'll have to suck it up some time but not before the election & next year is looking like a better time than this year just now. Might have some idea how it is starting to shake out by then.

1. I asked what constitutes an arms items pursuant to the registry
He reply with section 2 of the arms act 1983 and he read it to me and I followed it on legislation.govt.nz
2, I then asked how am I suppoose to register the spring or magazine I will import.
He (the supervisor) replied "this will not be necessary and is not required" but he was quick to point that any arms item as per section 2 of the Arms act 1983 description, imported, manufactured, exported, lost, etc will trigger an "activating circumstance" regardless if that item is a major part pursuant of the registry desciption or not.
As I said before, feel free to import any arms items and see how it goes.
I am just providing the feedback after a conversation with the register supervisor.

The arms regulations point out what is an "arms item" in relation to the register.

"I’ve been doing some “digging” regarding the registry and activating events. Although the magazine you are importing is not required to be registered, the Registry will be notified of the import and it will then create an activating event, so you will need to register your firearms/major parts/PCCK, 30 days after the notification. All the information on how to register will be in the notification email that you should receive.
I apologise for giving you the wrong information previously, this is a new department and not one that I work in. if you do require any further information regarding the Registry their email is firearmsregistry@police.govt.nz"

When you trigger an event by buying a firearm or major part, do you then register the firearm or part only? Or do you then have to register everything you have?

My interpretation would be that I have 5 years to register what I currently have but if I buy a firearm I'll have 30 days to register it.

If you buy a major part or firearm, you have 30 days to register those and every other firearm and major part in your possession.

Nope you would need to register everything you have.

Some of those "glory /lucky dip/box of good shit" we all used to rummage through at auctions could likely tie the registration process in knots

not looking forward to it. Have to do it over the phone and I think you can only do so many items per call so I was told...

Oh man I have seen some glory box collections that go on forever , my mind boggles how they are going to register everything without a bulls up over the phone ….impossible I would say .

The post you have quoted above is in regards to a triggering event when buying a firearm or part, buying any part is not a triggering event, only a major firearm part or firearm.

In regards to a triggering event when importing firearms or parts, I am unsure about this as I have not done any research into it. But as one of my other posts pointed out, in the arms regs, in relation to the register, an arms item is a major firearm part or firearm etc. The arms regs and arms act have arms items as different things, that's where a lot of the confusion has come about. If it has anything to do with the register, the bellow picture is what an arms item is.
