As already suggested 6.5x55 or maybe a 260. I think the Swede will be cheaper to run if you are not a reloader. My 16yr old is a skinny bugger and shoots my 260Imp fine.

You've got no idea how tempted I was to purchase. Just seeing what's out there first, and what's recommended. Others will come up

Unless you plan to get into reloading I'd probably leave the 6.5's, if you intend to start they would be great.
As said above, any 6.9x64, 7mm, 30 cal supressed if you wish will get the job done.

Gibbo's idea though, I'd possibly leave that till later on .

Are you really going to be shooting to 400m?
A nice light and hand rifle in 7.62x39. Plenty of single shot break actions around for safe carry, or go a CZ in a bolt action. Light on recoil and noise when suppressed and gets the job done on anything up to reds.

Are we going to be shooting 400m?

No. 200m is as far as really comfortable with at this stage. But at a later date when after tahr, and a longer shot is the only option, it would be good to have that ability. Even at 200m, I like to get closer, even though I know my 270 is zeroed at that. It puts 3 into a group under 2 inches at that distance.
As I said, it's to future proof for that occasion.

My Browning A-Bolt 243… has see some work/country and shoots bloody well with Winchester 100gn Super X… Currently doing a load development with 85gn Speer Soft Point Boat Tail and 95gn Targex… It has a Leopold base and rings and a VX1 and a old school GunWorks suppressor…
PM for more details if interested and an offer…

I may have missed it but how old is the lad?? I wouldn't go pushing a 270 on him, maybe 243/708 be softer shooting Hamish

All I say is go easy, create a flinch and it could ruin his shooting. My 12 yr old has shot a couple of Dee eith my suppressed 284, but that boots about same as 708

Which ever you go for put a can on it I think the 7-08 is the better option if you don't reload. This is the way I went with my son after starting out with a .223.

I'm kinda with peril on this except I'd go a 300 blackout 16" barrel Ruger ranch like I have.

Zero kick good knockdown with the 308 sized Pill and a surpressor and you have a rifle for now as a youth they'll never develop a flinch on and later on it makes a awesome bush stalking rifle at a reasonable price.

    Ideal !
