I think the extra surface area helps with strength aswell.

Basically you can not gain strength by removing material, but it can be gained by moving that material to a different location.
    Yep.
And lots firmly still believe that an existing barrel is made stronger by fluting ha ha.

I'm thinking of having my legs fluted.
Stronger, lighter, less heat build up and I will look cool.

I like fluting, and generally only fire one shot so so heat dispersion blah blah blah means nothing

Fluting a barrel is like putting mag wheels on your car.

Got mine fluted the day I hit 16,mate kept telling me I looked cool, that worried me at times.
At my age now those fluted legs are a real problem going down hill, they will one day snap off and go up my arse the cook reckons and I know she's right.

I think the problem is that you started to make improvements too early @doinit. 16 was way too young. I just let my natural charm and good looks carry me through when I was 16, and have held myself back for improvements for when they would be really needed. Now my legs really do need some work on them, so I've sent them off for fluting and a matte finish. When I get them back from Gunworks and fit them back on, my wife will really have to turn on the charm to keep me. I will be a man of calibre.
