Dang first centre rifle aye, thought a .223 would be a good start
Grouchy Smurf had it right all along...
I have owned a .270 before. Have looked at a nice .243 Ruger but from what I've heard might be a bit on the light calibre side of things.
308 is sounding good.

Are you going to reload for it ?
FALL IN LOVE WITH THE NUMBERS , NOT THE IDEA
270 , 6.5 x 55 , 308
If this is to be a hunting rifle then my personal pick would be the 270 , there is a reason why it's highly regarded worldwide as a hunting round .
If your going to do a lot of shooting at the range as well as hunting get the 308 .
If your happy to do everything in a traditional , understated , efficient way , then get the 6.5 x 55 .

What you going to use it for ??
223 is great entry rimfire
Cheap to run
Good for kids
A killer
Centre fire !!!!
You're pretty sharp for someone who doesn't know Fonzie.
Have you bought one yet Dundee??
223 would do the job assuming you can shoot straight.
Get a faster barrel twist rate so you can shoot heavier rounds easily. 1:8.
Nice a cheap to run and very versatile.
