Thread: Good scope for a 10/22.

Hey yall ,
Im after a cheap but good scope for my 10/22 for rabbit hunting and pest control.
I want to do the ol scope shuffle , put the stealth scope off the 10/22 onto my 22 mag, as the scope on that is rubbbish. I want more magnification as the stealth scope is fixed.

What scopes do you lads run on your .22's and if there are any second hand scopes out there...please hit me up. !

over the years have used fixed 4x and fixed 6x....tried 3x9x40mm and to be honest for the 50yard max I use the 22lr there is not much in it....possibly the best scope Ive had on 22lr was a fixed 2 3/4x redfield bear cub...it was post n rail,the only bugbear was post went through rail so had two aiming points and I used to get confused LOL.
currently have fixed 6x and happy with it.... there are so many options sub hundy new..... 3x9 gives enough at top end for headshooting rabbits if you can hold steady...with advantage of bit wider FOV for up close of walk around shooting.

All of the shooting I do around the family farm is stalking and when i can headshots.
Any thoughts on the tesco sportsman 3-9-40 scope ?

How much money do you at to spend?
If you are looking at under $300 my advice would be:
-Buy 2nd hand
-Buy a well regarded brand
-Spend as much money as possible
-Get the most basic scope possible, less is more (eg no point in buying illumination if the glass is like muddy water)
-Go for less magnification, high magnification with rubbish glass is a false economy (a nice fixed 4x or 6x is far better than a shitty 3-9)

its a 22lr...if glass is clear and it will hold zero (not a lot to ask really) it will be fine. mt .22lr doesnt get a lot of use,shotgun good to 50 yards and .223 or .22-250 takes care of 100-300 yard shots so the .22lr sort of sits in no mans land....lots cheaper and quieter to use. loads of basic 4x32mm nikko stirlings and tascos have stood test of time on .22lrs if you want slightly better a 6x40mm really shines.....Ive just on sold my JW with an awesome fixed 6x leupold MX on top...that is possibly the nicest setup Ive had pleasure to use......

Got a Bushnell Elite 2-7 and a 3-9 under $300 each

I now run Bushnell Droptine scopes with the shorter focal length for 22's. They're pretty good and work well with that caliber. There are online drop charts available for the various factory ammo options too... or you can just pull the triger and wing it. I think they're about $420 new.

I have a 2x7 Bushnell on my 10/22 which works well. Most of the time it's on 4x but sometimes it's nice to be able to wind it up a little for a clearer view. Also good for checking the zero , the higher magnification makes it easier.

General points which you may already know and/or disagree with. I want my best scope on my rimfire as the targets are small. An adjustable objective/side focus is nice to have if you don't want targets to be blurry. Magnification is good! Don't get hung up on rimfire-specific scopes as long as the focus is adjustable, it's all good.

I have a VX-2 3-9 x 32mm on my rimfire. It's OK, but next time around, I want a BDC reticle.

I have a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 3-9x40 here not doing anything, nice glass and has the bdc reticle. $220

I enjoy hunting a wide range of game but in this region the reality is 90% of the lead that goes downrange is heading for rabbits. Many years ago I decided that having a cheap, fixed 4x scope on my 10/22 was a dumb idea because it was the rifle I used most frequently. I was tempted to put some Euro glass on it but that wasn't really practical so I went for the Droptine. As MB states, its not necesaary to go for a rimfire-specific scope and I'd never used one before, but it does work quite well and the drop charts online are spot on for the CCI subs I use in confined areas.

If its going to be the rifle you use the most, put a decent scope on it. Just because "its only a 22LR" doesn't mean go cheap. Life is short, spend up large and enjoy it.

Edit: That scope above sounds like a good bang for your buck option.

@Mintie I'll take it if OP doesn't want it.

I use a second hand or is it a new 50 buck scope…seems to work. To be fair I don’t usually further than 40-50 meters with it.
