    Yep, nearly all the new clearings I've found recently on satellite images are near vertical faces. Fatmap is free and gives 3D images. Worth a play.

    I ve the same experience as cigar with my garmin oregon. It willl record track for more than a day with a pair of eneloop batteries ( or garmin which look just like white eneloops). Its looking at it specially with the backlight on that uses batteries qui k.

    I use garmin basecamp on mac but will look at mapsource after advice above.

    Map and compass navigation involves following features like ridges or river flats that can be a bit round about or thickly vegetated. With a gps you can sidle and cut across country knowing just where youre going and take the easiest route on the ground. Depends on your nous about the country youre in but its exhilarating and save a lot of energy walking and grovelling.
