Ok I think I've given up on a second hand 308. So looking at tikka 308 l/h stainless less in factory stock with dpt suppressor, Harris biped, leupold 6.5-20*50 pick coming once it all comes together. Questions, a better stock? Muzzle break instead of a Dpt? Going to be used on the island half the year 25-200m shots, the other half of the year Canterbury so out as far as I get comfortable shooting. No ideas,on a load yet, but using 2206h for the 223 so same powder would be handy, thinking 150 sst amax

Tikka stocks are fine, in fact I reckon they are probably one of the stiffer factory synthetic stocks out there, I put a carbon fibre stock on mine and it made it a bit nicer to carry but it still shot the same (really well) and I ended up selling it and going back to the factory one as the money tied up in it was better spent elsewhere.
Extra 50000000 cool points though with a carbon stock....

If youre going to use 150sst look at just using factory superformance, you will have trouble getting a handload to go faster and when I sighted in @sambnz's t3 308 with it, it shot like a laser

Scope seems a bit extreame for he ranges you stated. 25m at 6.5 mag will be fun if the animal moves

Have found factory shoots better in my 223 than I can reload.... Would need to spend alot of time and $ to bring my reloading up to a higher level. Got a few part boxes of factory to try it with

6.5-20 is a bloody lot of magnification for 25-200y!

I would not go above 4x for any bush work and 3x is better 2x is great.

I would just chuck a 2-7 on it while on the island and you can chuck the hubble back on it when youre up in canterbury

If someone tells me factory is better than reloads I question how well they have tried to replicate the factory load. Same or similar projectile shape and or seating depth will usually get you in the ballpark.
Could also be oversizing/bumping the shoulder of the brass too much.

In saying that I have had 4 .223s.
I have used the same load for years.
Just seating depth has varied between them.
You can always reload better ammo than a factory can produce imo.
You just have to find the right ingredients and recipe.

Fair enough and sound reasoning. But if you have the gear there is no reason you cannot equal or better it.

Pm me your mag length and I will send you some loads to try that will be well under max charge.
If they go as good as your factory loads they are cheap and easy to replicate once you work up to a max safe pressure.
