I don't know much about its history as it is from a deceased estate but it's a genuine FN, from between Nov 1971 to 1973. Suspect it is an Austrian FN as it has the Austrian coat of arms stamped into some components and appears to have a StG 58 stock.

The aftermarket upper receiver is wearing a ZOS 10-40x50 scope with illuminated reticle, Tapco pistol grip. Not sure what the story is with the barrel - initially thought it was a Para (50.63) but they have different receivers to the fixed stock versions.
Following on from this, I've received (finally) an official reply from FN Herstal and it reads:

    Dear Sir

    It is a standard type.
Yout FAL was manufactured in 1962.

Prior to that I've also worked out that the crests are German, not Austrian (thanks @Tommy) meaning it served as a G1 in the Bundesgrenzshutz (West German Border Guards). The barrel was cut down by previous owner.

    Oldest firearm I own!

wont get to shoot it until friday but i love it already. got it from burley arms with 3 mags and a muzzle break and was still cheaper than every where else. also let me pay it of over 3 months and was really good and freindly to deal with.

The versa mas is 22" 8+1 (but I have a small plastic rod in it to limit it to 7rnds to keep it A-cat)... but when my e-cat comes through it may go back to 8rnds...

Not new, had it probably two years now.
But as people are talking about them

Versamax "tactical" (fuck I hate that word) 22"

Approx 2000 rounds of all sorts so far without any cleaning or issues.
Love that with surplus buckshot I can have all the shells in the air at once and keep it on target
