Question. If I were ever to travel to NZ for some varminting, what category of license would I need for my new build?

Here she is. STAG10 18.7" Barrel, 6.5 Creedmoor, 1/8 ROT, IBI Barrels Heavy Barrel, Air gauged.

In Canada, the AR15 is restricted, but the AR10 is not.

With the Current Stalinda issues would this be prohibited to bring in country to shoot varmints?

It's banned here. I doubt you will get an exemption as a visitor. Just bring a manual action.

My cuzzies' workshop is like a Savage factory, there's that many bits and pieces. They build up rifles with factory parts in a morning, sort out a load after lunch, go hunting. Love the modularity of the stocks, actions and the DIY barrel change tool. So easy.

Annoys me that they are so expensive over here, for what they are.
Serious shooters has the biggest range of them.

I was hoping that someone like Ken would bring some in. His prices are always sharp.

Just taking the piss @Tahr and I hope Ben took it that way. I know he loves them and has a few.
Savage make good rifles that shoot well and are hard to beat in the value for money stakes. Ascetically they are not my cup of tea, but that"s a personal thing.
    No gun snobbery intended.

Depends what you compare them to I guess - the package deals are good value, you can often get the Mod.16 'trophy hunter' package with a Weaver 3-9x40 for $1k which I'd take over a Howa+Nikko Stirling package for the same price without a moments hesitation. Seem to be sharper bare rifle deals on Howa though if you don't mind the wobbly hogue stock (unless they improved them now? I haven't used a recent one, only older 1500s and always found them heavy and clunky).

Budget models like the Axis compare well enough to other brands budget offerings too from memory, though its a while since I looked at those because they don't interest me that much.

Compared to a Tikka T3 a Savage for a few hundred less is a bargain to me - having tried both the only thing I can remember being better with Tikka was their synthetic stocks are a bit stiffer and much better finished cosmetically. The Savage had a crisper trigger, smoother action, better ergonomics with 3-stage tang safety and flush mag, better accuracy in that case but I know Tikkas are generally accurate too.

I've also used Savages back to back with Rem700s and again, found the Savages better at pretty much everything.

Personal preference/feel is always a factor of course and some people just won't find them a good fit. I like them anyway!

Their more specialised versions (long range hunter etc) do seem to have a big price jump though considering they use the same action etc. Maybe because they don't bring many in? I've always thought the main reason they aren't more popular here is just lack of marketing - the big gun shops mostly push Tikka and Howa really hard and forget about the rest.

It was interesting to have a look around a gun shop in Canada last year and see Savages outnumbering most other brands on their racks 2:1, and not much cheaper than our prices once you take taxes into account.

That's good advice @Gravel Ben. I had a trawl through my email to try and remember why I thought they were overpriced here, and bow remember the impression was created by my efforts to import a Varmint Low Profile in .22-250 1:9" twist. That was through Sportways, the NZ wholesaler.

It was my cuz who was encouraging me to get one, but he'd told me what he could get it for... and I just about choked when I got the Sportways price. Just the way it is over here. I didn't go ahead with it.

But yeah you're right, had a good look at the local selection and it is better than I thought.

The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds
