    Gun serial numbers for Registration

I have had a few serial numbers to stamp on guns recently for guns being registered, as such I have decided that for the next couple of months or so I will charge just $20 for this, but all money will be donated to the local Whangarei Hospice.

Call me on 021 223 8222 to book in and I will in most cases do it while you wait.....Whangarei based.

    Cheers

Question from an ignoramus: why wouldn't they already have one?

Some of the older stuff just doesn't, I guess not a requirement back then in all countries.

@fssprecison I was discussing this with the butcher last night when I was picking up my gourmet goat patties. He has a 1900 (roughly) Winchester with no numbers. So the question is, can you register a firearm without a serial number? Is it compulsory to have a serial number? How do you go about selecting the numbers, do you just pick 6 or 8 random numbers, like LOTTO? Or do you need to contact the manufacturer and get one allocated, which reflects date/year of manufacturer? Does adding numbers, does that de-value the authenticity of the rifle and make it less collectable?

Oh those questions opens up a can of worms. I suspect that you could not register a firearm without a serial number. The FSA/TTP require an identifiable serial number / marking so you could make up anything as long as it is attached with permanency. For example, your initials and the figures of your year of birth would meet the criteria. But the stupidity of this is that someone somewhere with the same initials and year of birth could do the same thing to a firearm of the same make and model. As to your question about affecting value, a purist would answer in the affirmative but the FSA/TTP are completely out of shits to give.

Brother did one recently and on enquiring from local muppets (FLA) was instructed to use his date of birth and the last three numbers of his F/A licence ( think I got that right). Sounds like one of the few things from them that make complete sense

Up to 1968 in the USA , .22 rifles were not required to be serialised. The Gun Control Act of 1968 made it mandatory for all firearms to be serial numbered - prior to that , manufacturers tended not to do that as it was another step in the manufacturing process and cost money.

I believe that you need a serial number to register, seems you can apply for exceptions. See attached document.

As for creating a number see attached the guide that has been issued, it suggests using two letters, say initials, date stamped and four numbers from the license number, so John Smith with License number X34587 gets his gun stamped in 2004....serial number JS244587. Actually seems to make sense.

As for placing, some come from the manufacturer with stamping under the wood or in a location not initially obvious so I guess that is an option.
