Sounds like you want a good all rounder, this is similar my my first AR and i think it could suit you

    RRA ATH carbine
1-8 twist barrel so you can use 70gr projectiles for deer, 18" quality match barrel - accurate and get a few extra FPS over 14.5" or 16", Nice 2 stage trigger - RRA is one of my favorite. Downside is that the heavy profile barrel and the hand guard will make it a bit heavy but its all about trade offs, you gain good accuracy and you have rails to attach anything you want to the hand guard.

Rock River Arms LA-15 ATH Carbine. | Trade Me

Edit: Its a bit cheaper here but out of stock
ROCK RIVER ARMS NZ LAR-15 ATH 223 from Delta Sector NZ

if you did go that way Id swap you for my plain free float hand gard which is the RRA standard free float which is light as buggery.

People who bang on about "brand X is crap but brand Y is awesome blah blah blah" give me the shits. Its as spanners said. There are a small handfull of companys that do the forgings and then other companys smash their logo on them.

Buy whatever you can afford and in a configuration you want. The rock rivers barrels are cryo treated, my Lar-8's point of impact doesnt really change but my DPMS will string a bit until it is warm and then it holds patterns relatively nicely. Look at what sort of barrel you want also. Crome lined ones will last twice as long as non chrome lined but will not generally be as accurate. H-bars make the gun heavy especially in the 20" variants but it is not as noticable on a short gas system gun. Twist rate is important also, fast twists like 1:7 stabilise heavy projies while 1:9 is good to about 70gr (ish). Triggers are usually the first thing you will change out so look at that aspect also. RRA's triggers are not that bad and there shouldnt be a need to change them but they are still not as good as any of the other specialist triggers out there.

Ive never been a fan of the SL-8's, they are heavy, plasticy, not modular, parts are hard to come by and i think the trigger group is plastic. And theres also the "Heckler and Koch, because you suck and we hate you" side to it!

I forgot about the SL8 - the whole original topic thing LOL
I had one.. the only one in history to have the barrel fall off by itself.. yip.. come loose - Robbie Tiffin reacons they are a complete barstard to get off as so tight, but mine fell off LOL

Mate an me took ours for a walk round the coast one night - I didnt have a sling and LITERALLY wanted to throw it in a bush and get it on the way back

Good - quality build, accurate as sin
    Bad,ugly, super heavy, crap ergos

I sold mine before the prices crashed on them thankfully

You would be MAD to buy one, but go for gold if you feel the need

if 300m is the expected max id say go longer than 14inch look more at 18
I have a 16 on mine and at 300 Id stalk closer specially on deer
Never 300 for deer. Just for rabbits where it dont matter if you miss plus wild turkey and peacock control. Thats main reason for semi auto
I shoot couple of places where you can get 30 mtrs from deer and sick of blowin massive big holes in them when two quiik rounds small caliber head neck would always do the trick
plus also as selling a tack driver heavy .223 to do this also want some of the longer range Ive grown to enjoy on pest control.
I reckon that Ill order a custom RRA Gun. Will figure out spec and post it next couple weeks to see what you think ..

Thanks all for the help so far steepish learning curve and obviously easy to get burnt.

you wont get burned, it will just be a money pit.

if possible try out as many as you can to develop a feel. dont buy the first one you pick up, or even the 4th

which part of the country are you in? go to a range nearby. talk to the chaps with ar15s they are usually more than happy to tell you about their toys
let you pick it up ect.

the only downside of the ordering it exactly how you want it road is that it takes quite a while to get to nz.
mine was around 6 months, others have only been a matter of weeks

    Re: H & K sl8-6

I would refrain from ordering custom, my first AR was a custom order I waited 6+ months for a RRA predator pursuit (18 months ago) and in the end I just got a RRA elite operator cause it was in stock. With the range these days there really shouldn't be a need to custom order. My RRA is a fantastic rifle, I have taken deer and pigs no worries, but ammo selection and understanding the limitations of the 223 round is important

DIY it, I already have one on E so decided I needed some more on A
My Newest Addition and my first ever AR Stripped Lower build, (A Cat lower) currently wearing my Spare and somewhat modified RRA upper.
Spikes lower with JP Trigger and Ace Stock

1 down, 2 lowers to go and 2 uppers as well once all the rest of the bits arrive, Oh god my poor Credit Card
Still waiting on stripped uppers (been on B/O since April) and 2 Kreiger cut rifled barrels, 2 JP free float tubes and 2 DPMS Diamond coated Bolt/Carriers

What would this be like STI AR15

Chambered in .223 Remington, the 16? 410 SS barrel features a 1:8 twist with a mid-length gas system. Featuring a Nordic Tactical Compensator and JP Trigger group, what really sets this rifle apart from the rest of the pack is the custom STI Valkyrie hand guard and gas block. The Sporting Rifle has M4 feed ramps for improved feed reliability and a mid-length gas block to reduce recoil.

The hand guard is predrilled and tapped on the top and bottom with 1? hole spacing to accept JP rails and features slots (both cosmetic and functional) with 1/2? centers which allows the customer to use T-nuts to mount add-on side mounted rails at virtually any angle. The exclusive STI Valkyrie Tactical gas block features cosmetic design cuts to better match the STI hand guard and sports a Picatinny rail on the top.

The unique STI Valkyrie Competition hand guard has all the same great features as the Tactical model, with a 12? OA length for increased stability for the competitive Shooter. The STI Valkyrie Competition Gas Block is light weight and concealed under the hand guard. The entire rifle has an Anodized finish with black Teflon coating to provide a durable, attractive finish that will hold up to even the most demanding shooting. And best of all, it’s covered by STI International’s unrivaled warranty and customer service.

It SOUNDS like it has a heap of extras, but its STIs sales pitch
All they wank on about is the gasblock and the handguad.. 3 times.. LOL

    They are a nice gun - 8/10

If it has a can, I'd expect the barrel to be almost and inch shorter than factory

"extras" are only worth anything if they're something you want

    otherwise they're worthless
