Lightbulb Help finding old Tikka t3x or rem 700 actions that i can use as a base for a build.

    Hello.
I want to build a rifle from a well known and common action that isnt going to break the bank. I currently have a browning xbolt but thats no good as it has no stock options. I have a few calibers in mind for the build but will make my decision based on what action length and bolt face i can find. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Start with a bergara. probably don't have to do anything to it. The Remington that Remington should've been if it wasn't bollocksed by shit management for the last 25 years

enerally just buy a second hand one with the correct bolt and mag for what your intending to finish up with then rebarrel and restock. T3 actions are great for this and are much better with a better trigger then a crappy ole rem

7 saum or 300 wsm. still deciding between. I load for a 7RM so i already have bullets for 7 saum, but a 300 wsm would also be fun. I want a LA so i can seat the bullets out far in an aics mag.

If you're not aware Tikka T3 / T3x share the same action length. So that will allow you to use short or long action with just swapping the bolt stop and magazine. Long action you can run it as is with short action cartridge's and just have longer bolt throw.
So all you need to do is decide on magnum or non magnum bolt face.

Bonus is the long actions chamberings tend to sell for a little less than the short actions.

Edit. : Oh i see you're after magnum bolt face. Be easier and cheaper to get a magnum rifle to start with so you dont have to open the bolt face

Now Tikka factory magazines is limited on its long action magazine length but that is usually enough for the short action cartidges to seat out far. Maybe someone with 7 saum can confrim.

If you want AICS magazines for Tikka you have to be careful as there is two lengths. Taken from https://targetdynamics.co.nz/product...s-long-action/
So depending what chassis / bottom metal you get you will need different magazines.

3.715″ 300 WM and 338 LM for our chassis systems and other DBM
3.715″ Outside Length: 3.625″ max cartridge overall length (COAL)
3.560″ 300WM for our chassis systems for Tikka long action rifles (270 Win, 30-06, 300 WM etc)
3.560″ Outside Length: 3.470″ max cartridge overall length (COAL)

I had a chinese copy atlasworxs AICS long action bottom metal and it used the full lenght AICS magazines. For it to work properly people say i would of had to notch the bottom of the feed ramp on the tikka action.
But no mention of this on the atlasworxs website but they list the normal 3.715" magazine length. I never got around to fitting it so cant confirm.

be warned re-barreling is now frightfully expensive

Buy a Howa in the barrel and calibre you want and then add a stock. Look up reloaders supplies in Auckland.

I shoot left handed so im' cursed

Has anyone used a howa 1500. How is the action and trigger compared to a tikka?

The Tikka has a nicer trigger and is a smoother bolt than the howa 1500 IMHO but I don't like the narrow port/acess for fingers in the T3/T3X acction (i like the older T595/695's etc).

Both better in all aspectsincluding build quality than Remmington 700 although it may be 'inconsistent' build quality rather than all bad.

Either of your choices will work on a Tikka T3, my 7prc was a Tikka 7-08 and had it reamed and bolt face opened up.
I would get a T3 in mag cal then all you need is a rebarrel.

Howa triggers are generally better than Tikka.

Factory triggers in general can be a little variable, some brands have some that are great and then you find one that just sucks. Rem X-mark poo triggers are just garbage, the smooth shiny blade is the worst aspect of that design - anything slippery on your finger and you slide all over it which is simply awesome for consistent let off. The earlier Rem Walker-type triggers are able to be made to be surprisingly good for a hunting trigger, but for a custom type setup I'd see what you can find in aftermarket options.

It for me is now a 'path of least resistance' deal, have a good look at what donor actions or rifles you can find and then look to see if you can find all the accessory bits you would like to use locally and at the price you want to pay. After a few laps back and forwards, you'll settle on what you have to use to get the combinations you need for bits for the build.
