Thread: Hi tec stock failure

I have no Experience with carbon gunstocks but I have a lot of experience with carbon fiber fishing rods
They are super strong but also very easy weakened even the lightest scratch can Compromise strength
They won’t Necessarily break right away but they just break for no Apparent reason one day when the rod is loaded
If I had to geuss this is what happened to your stock
You probably had some very minor damage on the wrist probably not even visible just a scratch from hunting would do it
They you loaded it in a way it didn’t like doesn’t take much once that prior damage is there

Not saying that is what happened it’s just my geuss with no experience

I'd agree with this , again no experience with stocks but plenty with rowing shells and blades, and a wee bit with yacht masts - the slightest bit of "damage" and they'll go, and the noise they make when they do is something you'll never forget!.

Same, same - I have no experience with a carbon fibre stock, these ultra light fan dangled things some people crave nowadays just dont float my boat. But I do have a bit of experience with rods, and some other CF stuff, and the slightest nick, damage, scratch etc can cause the item to break, usually while under load. I would respectfully suggest that this stock has had some slight damage prior, just enough to weaken the integrity of the exterior. Then at some later time, may only be a few minutes, may be months later, the stock has had some stress from a direction different to what the design has allowed for, and bingo, your ultra light fan dangled fancy CF stock lets go. The stock exterior may have very well been bruised when the pack was laid down on a small prominent stone, maybe even when it was being carried in the pack, maybe the bruise was not even apparent, maybe it was just placed the wrong way in the back of your truck on the way to hunting. The reality is who knows but it up and bloody broke. Now you can get pissy cos it happened just when you wanted your bang stick to go bang, or you can get pissy cos you never realised how fragile CF products can be. Or you could contact the manufacturer on his day off and ask him politely or impolitely, "whats he gonna do about it". Personally I would've sucked it up and contacted him on a work day, and asked what could be done. Expecting a replacement after 2 years is a bit of a big ask, how long do you expect a warranty to be? Or you could ask politely how much for a replacement stock cos you like the product.
To call out a manufacturer of a very well presented and respected product on a public forum is a no no in my book! And for said manufacturer having to resort to posting on the forum to put forward his side of the story........should never have to happen. As a manufacturer for many years, I fixed any later issues at my own cost regardless of fault or usage, EXCEPT where the customer was acting like a dick!
Me thinks there is possibly more to this story than we have been told, and given Kens following and reputation for quality, I would have no hesitation in buying one of his stocks if I was inclined to go down the CF stock.

I dealt with Ken a few months ago. Dropped my rifle to him, and picked it up 5 days later, bedded and cheaper than he’d quoted. Couldn’t be easier. I reckon it’d take more than getting hung up on a branch to snap mine.

Im thinking you fella with flashasmichaeljackson CF stocks should buy a couple of rolls on insulation tape and wrap those babies up good n proper...will stop any crap scratching them and give tiny bit of bump protection while adding next to no weight...silage tape is even better as its 4" wide and even thicker than insulation tape.

Its not a production fault otherwiese it would have manifested itself a long time ago and is 2 years or older so wear and tear comes into play. Wouldnt be surprised if the maker only had a 12 month warranty, coming on here and throwing a wobbly about shit service is pretty fucking childish when you dont have a leg to stand on.

There a lot of ass kissing going on here.
So it shouldn’t be covered under warranty? He says he’s only after a fair go...
I’d have done the same as him if what he says is in fact the truth as 2 years is fuck all.

2 years warrantee for a rifle stock? don't think so - Try getting that from Beretta NZ for Sako carbon stocks, good luck with that. No different.

Have never seen in the sales blurb for any stock, let alone lightweight carbon ones:
"Rugged dependable lightweight carbon stock designed to handle being knocked about and tolerate adverse conditions and abuse by Kiwi hunters"

Yeah well, one thing I've learned from this thread is I won't be buying an expensive carbon fiber stock no matter which brand.......ever!

Kinda put off by this too, was considering one of these 'external carbon' stocks where the weave is visible but very discouraged now.

Not all are made equal, some 'carbon' stocks have a carbon frame underneath and have an outer of hard resin/epoxy. I have had three stocks like this made by PSE composites of Ireland and they were great in terms of both product and aftercare (all of mine were bought used, and the one which I sold on after a full repair had been seriously mucked up by the previous owner).

Technically, wood is 50% carbon so you can heat up your wood stock a bit to make it 100% carbon.

One carbon stock breaks and people swear off them. Ive known plenty of wooden stocks to break through the pistol grip. Im very happy with my carbon stocks. They are stable and light.

As per Tahr, I've busted two walnut stocks through the pistol grip with falls and I'm not a rough bastard by any means, partically fussy with my rifles as they are assets to me.
I've switched to CF to handle the hunting I do and made no assumtions that I couldnt bust one just like wood.

Just buy Bell and Carlson stocks and forget Carbon, all things to all people, dont break, dont scratch, quiet, filled with a foam that deadens recoil
