Why not go 16 in barrel ?
My naughty black gun was 16 and was still plenty quiet with suppressor

Sounds same setup as me. One of Ken's stocks and hinged floorplate internal mag.

so THIS right here is the balancing act....its the same argument/discussion/equasion as fast twist Vs std twist...... you CANT have cake and eat it too.
you cant have slow twist and run heavy projectiles
you cant have short barrel and get top velocities------within reason
you cant shoot bigger animals with light projectile at distance---within reason

my take on it...its a balancing act,you NEED to work out end goal and work backwards from there.
really short is neat to carry...but you trade some velocity, and ears closer to muzzle so need suppressed.
fast twist allows heavier projectiles upping preformance so to be closer to mighty EBRG in terminal effect...but it costs, isnt on all rifles
you can shoot bigger animals with light projectiles but need to get in closer and pick your shot.
you can add or subtrack suppressor baffles...less is shorter and tiny bit lighter BUT will be louder.....ITS ALL balancing act.
you could shoot red deer fair up the arse dept with your 338 or 45/70 and be confident of killing it quickly...not so much with 223,wouldnt dream of doing so....but the big cannons kick more and are costly to feed by comparison....swings n roundabouts.

for anyone's unless Info... my tikka is 17 inch, standard overbarrel suppressor is just off the standard stock. and its still about 100mm shorter than the full length barrel.

Can't argue there Micky but apparently 55 gr 223 should only drop between 100-200 fps depending on ammo type going from 20 to 16 inch , not a great amount I would have thought . The graph I looked at showed average of 103 fps difference between 20 and 16.5 inch barrel with 55 gr projectile .... 3071 down to 2968 fps ...
But you're right , it's all about compromise depending on rifle use and personal priorities .

We recently cut the 7.62 x 39 back to 16.5 from 20 as most graphs actually show velocity INCREASE with shorter barrel . Hopefully they were correct graphs if using factory ammo...lol

the 22lr does the same...and Im darn near positive centrefire does if you playing with subsonic...eg longer barrel easier to get below speed of sound, short barrel needs stupidly small amount of powder and can still go above....
