I had one in SS 308 I upgraded the stock then sold it on for a Ruger Ultralight yet to knock anything over with that yet.
For the money I spent on my $750 excluding optic's who could complain for a bush bashing synthetic stock rifle ideal

+1 for the Howa, but then again I own one..

.308 in stainless, Varminter with the thumbhole stock. Shoots VERY nicely with home loads, and overbarrel suppressor - 1/2 inch with hunting projectiles, 1/4 inch with Sierra MatchKing projectiles... Only gripe is, the Nasty factory trigger! Which can either be easily replaced with a Timney, or else I can provide a link to a page where I pulled mine apart and theres step by step to clean up the sears.. Or, you can land a nice trigger in it already as a lot of ppl have...

Even though its a varminter with the fat barrel, I don't have an issue carrying it up n down a few hills... well up and sit with the bino's and bipod..

Hmm, I COULD post a link, though it DOES take you to another forum..
perhaps then, to make it cleaner... Google

My take on improving Howa 1500 trigger

failing that, I'll post said link...

(will I get in trouble for doing so?)

    Virtually every thread gets highjacked.
