.270 magnum performance in a standard case, projectile weights from 90 - 160grs covers most bases.

As far as platform goes, semi custom tikka would be the go for the best mix of cost effectiveness and performance.

.12ga would be most versitile but pure rifle would have to go 223 for reasons Thar gave....closely followed by 270 as it WAS my one rifle for many years and did it all.

One rifle for all NZ game (rabbits to deer), requires (I like to be absolute in my opinions ), a medium caliber and cartridge case, so lets call that between .243, .257 and .264 with a 50-65gr case capacity.

Then combine that caliber to a light stock, a 22" barrel, med high magnification scope (4 -16x) and of moderate total rifle weight (6.5-7.5lbs).

This is a great place to be for a 'do it all' carry rifle and my personal preference would be in the caliber of 6.5 Creedmore.
A good job and a good wife has been the ruin of many a good hunter.

Maybe one rifle to rule them all is a bit of a stretch if small game is included? I shot a hare with my 7mm08 once. It was a headshot, or at least I thought it was, couldn't really tell.

Just to be different.... 17hmr. Only have small deer on the island and can pick my shots at less than 50m usually. More left on a rabbit if you want to eat it, much more pleasant on the ears and shoulders when spending an evening clearing out possums

7 mm STW unmolested...when used on small game one only has to be a close miss for it to die of fright with no meat damage.

If I was truly limted to one the 270win would be very hard to beat 90gn hp for flat shooting varminting to a long way out and a fair choice in the 140gn+ catagory to suit most bigger game to 400 + yards give or take

Yeah, this is a secrete Jacinda poll to gauge the hunters if they will be happy with one gun only. Looks like they are.
