Also be wary if you are transiting through any other countries other than your start/end countries (EG a layover in Australia or Hong Kong). Even the USA can be an issue if you transit through from a different country (EG fly out of Canada, layover in Hawaii). Most third party transit countries will want import/export paperwork even if you never see your bag or leave the airport.

That said, it's generally cheaper to fly with it as checked baggage than ship it separately. Just have a pile of paperwork with you and leave at least half a day's time between connecting flights anywhere you're going to hit customs where they'll want to go through your
    paperwork.

I’m looking into bringing in a muzzleloader and just trying to figure out the basics. Do I just need to get a Permit to Import from the Firearm Safety Authority and then find an USA seller that exports?

Or do people normally use an agent?
Out of curiosity, what muzzle loader is it? Definitely something a NZ agent couldn't bring in? Or can they, but it's a lot cheaper over there?

I'm looking at a CVA ACCURA MR-X or CVA Optima V2. Don't think they are available here.

I've looking at buying it in the US for about $US700 and flying back with it at no cost. 2-3 times more expensive to get an agent to import.
