The mausers made the finest hunting rifle that was adapted to military purposes. Im sure we all know the lee enfield copped a heap of flack from the "shooting fraternities experts" after the boer war and the p14, the ross and rimless cartridges were investigated but the smle stuck.
More countries used mauser action rifles because of excellent marketing but for a bolt rifle specifically designed for combat the lee cant be beat, just my opinion though.

    I hear (read) you.

Admittedly I have a soft spot for Teutonic technology but the the fact is that the Mauser action remains the most produced, copied and distributed bolt-action rifle technology to this day. That says something. Having said that, (gratuitous use of "said" aside), I would choose a Lee Enfield to carry into battle - double the magazine capacity, cock on close and just an all round good tool for getting the job done.

My 1942 Mk 4 No1, despite being a "beater" shoots fantastically.
