    Leupold M8 2x. Worth it?

    Hi all,

I want to get a classic looking scope for my Rossi.

There's an M8 2x Scout on Trade Me that would look great and has the desired eye relief. The reviews on here are a bit mixed about the quality of the M8. Ranging from "ok" to "terrible".

Wondering if it's really that bad, or if the good folk on here reckon it'll do the job for bush hunting.

The vortex crossfire scout will work too, but won't really fit the "classic" look.

    Willem

The M8s were good when they were new. They seem to go yellow and a bit hazy as they age and then they're not very good. You could send them away to Leupold to service though, lifetime warranty and all.

I've had a couple of m8 on old rifles. They're still sitting here. Bombproof and still clear after many many years. Although they have a few chips on the glass and are worn and scratched after a big life.

Got to question the scout type tho. Have you ever used a scout/pistol scope. It's really awful.

I haven't used a scout/pistol scope before. It seems to be an area of contention with some hating them and others liking them.

They work OK. Have benefits and also drawbacks as with anything. Glare between you and the scope blocking your vision is one, another is the fact it's a 2 or 2.5x scope with a small field of view...

There are three M8s in my cabinet.. fixed 6 on 22-250 fixed 4 on the .270. Fixed 3 on the 45/70. The four had been back to Leupold before I got it and it's awesome. Got two other fixed 4power versions and I didn't really feel the love. The one I kept has larger eye box and comes up bloody quickly to the eye. My vote is a definate YES

I don't think scout scopes are the best, or even 3rd best, answer to any question, in today's world

    I agree entirely

But the question lacked context by the OP

What, how and why do you want to use a Scout scope

I use them on repop muzzleloaders to avoid conflict with the hammer and nipple
Some guys use them to keep top eject lever actions clear

It really all depends on your use and application

I will gladly elaborate in the hopes there may be an alternative to the scout scope .

    1. The Rossi is a top ejecting lever action.
    2. I have astigmatism, so red dots are a bit iffy, but not terrible.
    3. The Leupold M8 would look good on the blued/wood rifle

I have 2 Vortex Crossfire II, and a Burriss scout scope, on Rossi Pumas and love them.

I have an old 2x tasco one fitted to a chiappa little badger, sitting forward clear of the hammer. I doubt it would win the 1000yd competition but TBH inside of it's envelope, I don't find it much better or worse or different than a normal scope.
